Another major point about the mitzva of Mikva is that the couple spends two weeks each month being "forced" to connect emotionally, not physically.
Like my teacher used to say: You go back to like when you were engaged (if the couple was shomer negiah).
This builds a deep, emotional bond in the couple. They're forced to connect through talking, shmoozing, taking walks, really connecting on a deep level. This creates a beautiful marriage, G-d willing.
