Yom Kippur is described in many ways. One very poignant description is that it is “once in a year.”
You see, the human soul is also described in many ways, with five different names, each describing a deeper level of her being. The fifth, deepest level is called yechidah, which means “one and unique.” Yechidah is the soul as she is fused and one with her Creator, so that the two are an inseparable whole.
Yom Kippur is the day that the essential bond of yechidah shines within the time and space in our world.
Meaning that once in a year, the One Above unites with the essential oneness of the soul here below within each one of us.
All else falls away.

Isaiah 1:18, ". . . Although your sins may be as crimson, they shall be white as wool. . ."
"My Beloved is to me a cluster of henna blooms in the vineyard of En Gedi," [Song of Songs 1:14]. This poetic verse speaks of the endearing LOVE GD has for His children. Henna is a small fragrant flower that is the color of crimson that releases a sweet aroma in the air. They are found in the En Gedi where there are fresh water springs, and grape vineyards. Amazingly, the En Gedi is near the Dead Sea, yet it thrives with life! GD is rich in Mercy "invites" us to turn away from our bad choices [dead things], and do those things that bring life - do Teshuvah. Return to GD, He will return to us, forgive and cleanse us with fresh spring water. Like the henna blooms in the vineyards of the En Gedi, our red blooms will become white, a sweet aroma in the air, and in GD's Nostrils. Our fast [sacrifice] brings life, light, and joy.
