When Greek philosophy arrived in Ancient Israel, many Jews embraced its ways.

But somehow, the more they reasoned, the more decadent they became. Until they turned viciously against their own people.

This is puzzling. How is it possible that reason and knowledge could lead a person to bigotry and hatred?

And yet, it happens repeatedly throughout history. Because, for the human being, like every other creature, one’s own desires will always override the objective truth.

That is why wisdom remains true only when pinned to moral principles which it cannot move.

Without those pins, it falls down, having only the whims of the heart on which to rely.

And a powerful mind can justify anything.
