B”H, 9 Teves, 5711,
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Greetings and blessings,
Enclosed is the kuntres [Published in Sefer HaMaamarim 5711, p. 155ff.] for the 9th of Teves,1 the conclusion of the eleven months from the day of the passing of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, זצוקללה"ה, נבג"ם, זי"ע, הכ"מ.2 Like the previous kuntreisim, [it is being given to you] to bring merit to people at large [by sharing it with them] and [with those in] your surroundings in particular. Zechus, [translated as “merit,”] also has the implication of enhancement and refinement. Through additional refinement on this earthly plane, we draw down additional lights from Above and [make it possible to] accept them in a better way.
As explained in the introduction to the kuntres,3 it is possible to say that after eleven months, a new pattern is begun with regard to the ascents of the soul in Gan Eden4 itself (just as it marks [the time of ascent] for those to whom the ascent from Gehinnom5 is relevant).
As such, all those who are bound to [the Rebbe] have the obligation and the opportunity to raise themselves from the situation in which they are found at present so that their bond [with the Rebbe] will not be weakened. On the contrary, [it should be strengthened].
The manner in which such a connection can be established was already explained by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ.6
I am coming with a suggestion [for action] from now until the day of the yahrzeit (Yud Shvat). [At that time, there begins a new phase of] ascent which follows the ascent described above,7 for then, [a unique revelation] associated with the day of the yahrzeit is evoked:8 [During this period,] everyone should, without committing himself with a vow, try to make an increase in the three vectors [of Divine service]: Torah study, Divine service [prayer], and deeds of kindness. [The increase] should include:
a) until the yahrzeit, the conclusionof five chapters from the Mishnah {[in accordance with our Rabbis’ teaching]:9 “Mishnah (משנה) shares the same letters as the word neshamah (נשמה, ‘soul,’)” and there are five [different] names for the soul},10 by heart or from a text. It would be desirable if [each community would] divide the entire Six Orders of the Mishnah [to be studied among themselves. If necessary,] they could join together with another synagogue or community of chassidic brethren.
b) a [special] recitation of Tehillim11 each day for this purpose,12 in a manner that enables him to complete the entire Tehillim once until the yahrzeit.
c) every day until the yahrzeit (obviously, aside from the Shabbosos), [one should donate to] charity, either before prayer or afterwards, giving pennies, i.e., small change. The Alter Rebbe would call these coins “plates [of armor”]13 . One should change the number of coins given from time to time so that this practice will not become obligatory, like a vow. Afterwards, [the coins] should be divided among different charitable funds.14
In addition to all the above, until the yahrzeit one should study by heart and imprint on his memory15 maamarim from the teachings of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, הכ"מ, in particular, the maamar [published for] the day of his passing (the maamar entitled Basi LeGani, Kuntres 74), either entirely or at least a portion of it. In this way, his teachings will rest in one’s midst even when one is involved in mundane matters.
As is obvious, [when] anyone adds to the above, an increase will be made for him.16
[From] one who waits to receive tidings from the positive consequences of all the above,
M. Schneerson
