The meaning of Ishmael's name reminds me of when the words of the Shema were said to me in English. For years, I thought it said, "Here..." instead of, "Hear..." A lively discussion when I shared my mistake. Reply

Re: 400 years 400 was an outside number, the maximum amount of years the Jews were to suffer in Egypt. But because the Jews kept their Jewish names, language and dress, the merited that the 400 years were retroactive ti Yitzchak's birth. Reply

400 years a few questions:
400 years 'in a land not their own' - but Yitzchok did live only in Israel proper?
also, 400 they will suffer - but in mitzrayim during Yaakov's life, there was no suffering?

I wondered about the same thing. It seems as if Yaakov had a very challenging life, until he spent his last years in Egypt of all places. At least he was pious enough to be interred in Israel Reply
