Greetings and blessings,

..I read the pan1that was in your previous letter at the gravesite of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, on the day of his yahrzeit. Certainly he arouses and will arouse abundant mercies on those who are bonded with him and on the members of the chassidic brotherhood in the things that they need.

As he himself wrote with regard to his revered father, the Rebbe (Rashab), (quoted in my letter for the yahrzeit):2 “Stand prepared....” Note the interpretation of the Baal Shem Tov to our Sages’ statement:3 “[Retribution is exacted against a person] with his knowledge and without his knowledge” (quoted in sec. 2 of the first maamar entitled Ani LeDodi in Sefer HaMaamarim [Yiddish]).”4 And “a good attribute surpasses [an attribute of retribution].”5

[There it is explained that the Heavenly Court cannot issue a judgment against a Jew without his consent. Therefore the person is shown a situation involving a colleague and he makes a judgmental statement. Later, when he is found to have conducted himself in the same way, the judgment he made about his fellow is applied to him.

With this statement, the Rebbe is implying that just as the Rebbe Rayatz declared that the Rebbe Rashab would bless his followers after his passing, the Rebbe Rayatz will certainly conduct himself in the same manner.]

[Yoma 76a. Implied is that if the punishment that a person states should be designated to his fellow is applied to him, certainly this holds true with regard to positive factors.]
