Does this story mean that having progressed to the higher levels of learning we should leave behind the dead-weight of what previously contained the basic lessons? Reply

I would think it becomes the foundation of your “higher levels of learning” Reply

From what I understood it's referring more about what your personal motivation/purpose (reward) is. When you're younger doing cool stuff is what rock's your world....as you grow you realize that cool stuff is not necessarily meaningful or important....so if you grew up and those things that moved you in the past are the same things that are you trying to push you forward now, it might be dragging you downwards instead.

I remember of a friend who went through the beautiful process of teshuvah...after some years he said "I don't feel the same push and flare from then" ...if we pay attention to what the Rebbe is saying, we could perhaps apply it saying that: If you're trying to get motivation (fire, push, etc) from the same things that moved you previously, it is now not helping you to go forward, rather holding you from growing into the next step.

hope I got it right, and hope it helps. Reply
