If we had been here first and then set the criteria for a very perfect G‑d, certainly one of our requirements would be that He be understandable.
Too bad for us—He was here first. As for understanding, that came later.

It is not certain to me that we would have voted that a god of our design be 'understandable,' 'completely comprehensible' or even 'more understandable' than our real G-d is to us as things stand now. Don't you think we would have realized that any god we could understand might be manipulated by one or some of us? That might make that kind of god possible of being corrupted and turned into just another tool of the more sneaky and/or powerful of us? In that situation, the god we created could become or would be an idol, in essence. That is a horrifying thought. I like that no matter what our G-D can never be corrupted and can only be co-opted by those for the Good. That may have a lot to do with the fact that He designed it so that we can not fathom His ways. Thank G-d for that! Reply
at this point in time the understanding is something of a process and may be more about us than Him. Reply
Confusing ...dont we always associate G-d with understanding, forgiving, merciful. Then with G-d can we presume that because of understanding He created a partner in Eve for Adam. And understanding having come later.. ."too bad for us" as you say.
Why ? Could you please enlighten.

His is the First and the Last
He is the Source -
His Logic works from the foundation of mutual love.
He created our logic the opposite: our mind calculates to benefit the self.
Our work is to learn his logic so that
Our final actions will be as the First - the Source

LOGIC IN G-D - OR LOGIC IN MAN?
I feel that we need to explain what we mean here. Are we talking about G-d being logical or Man being logical?
My feeling is that G-d must have been extremely logical to create Heaven & Earth - no easy or illogical task!
Further, since G-d created Man, He knew that Man would require logic to survive.
However, Man being Man, his "logic" sometimes eludes him and he does illogical things - in fact sometimes he does worse than that and does despicable things.
As for the question: "Who was first?" We are told very clearly that" "In the beginning G-d........."

Logic and concern It is in my opinion that we get aggravated too easily over the flaws that G-d seems to have however I feel that G-d has concerns and those are vast and we have to wait our turn and even then we have to wait even further for G-d to decide the why where and where of it all..and G-d is kind... I dont think the Rebbe would have microanalyzed G-d... who could?
As much as we want to make the words of Torah down to earth and within reach of people... We can not forget that G-d is G-d and way way above us... And we are not allowed to bring Him down for analyzing... Let's not get too familiar - We can not understand Him and there is lots of Beauty in that way of solely believing.

Wow
It is so common for us to look for logic and to try to understand everything. This is the same when it comes to G.od. We try to make Him logical and reasonable for us, so that we can relate just as much as we want with HIM.
But things are not like that.
Logic is based in knowledge and experience. To talk about perfect logic is to talk about a perfect being, with all the knowledge. We can not reach that level.
So Go.d is the beginning of logic, cause he cause it as a gift for us for peace of mind.
Our logic can´t create Go-d, cause we just don´t have all the knowledge.
So no, Go.d, with our knowledge will never be logical, we don´t have enough to get all the thing that he knows, and we don´t have the wisdom to understand Him.
If Go.d were logical and understandable for us, He just would´t be Go.d, but a creation of our perspective of what a god should be.

G-ds Perfection We were here first with G-d's logic and G-d's Perfection. Reply
Who's First
Dear
Rabbi Freeman,
Shalom i love your article and as G-d is here first we can't say that he is logical and understandable.

Who's First? Like the sun, moon and the stars, logic was created for man's benefit, and it is this logic that allows G-d to meet each individual exactly where they are Reply
Who is First? When you postulate a thought that can not be proven, the result will always be ambiguous. Men created the notion of G-D and religion, which both are logic. I dont think men wanted a perfect G-D, because we are not perfect, and dont want to be either. Reply
WHO'S FIRST? Maybe I am misunderstanding this - are you saying that G-d came first and that He did not have logic when he came? To me that sounds incredulous. Reply
What does it mean?
Does it mean that logic is not a divine atribute?
What could it be then?
Maybe a human created tool to reach Him?
I didn't understand...

Such confusion! I noticed such a confusion in the comments... In Fact, they are only adding credence to the very thinking the article is attempting to uproot: namely, a way of thinking where everything begins with my own perspective; I am an existing being, and therefore I see the world in a given way. When this is the way we think, we are limiting G-d to our finite, limited perceptions.
But the truth is, that G-d is the source of everything, including my own mind and logic, and therefore, He Himself is not limited to our own logic.
our incessant insistence on always making G-d logical and understandable stems from this wrong way of thinking. we have to realize that in the end, notwithstanding any logical explanations, proofs and what-not, His preceding the world renders Him unobligated by these limited, mind-based things.
