Think of your world as a massive jigsaw puzzle in three dimensions plus time. Every object and event that enters your world is meant to fit together neatly with all the other.
And yet they seem just a heap of discordant fragments.
Here is the trick to reassembling those broken pieces:
Start by finding your own purpose. Then move headstrong towards it. Once you find purpose, all that’s needed for that purpose will find you. And those things already attached to you will find their place as well.
Suddenly, where once noise and chaos tore you in a thousand directions, there plays a magnificent symphony.
Our purpose is to serve others. The specifics depend on our abilities and talents. The Rebbe admonished that we're never stuck; wherever we are, we should ask ourselves what needs to be done.
I think it was in the book Life’s Journey According to Mister Rogers in which Fred tells of a seminary classmate who dropped out because he was such a perfectionist that his sermons took too long for him to write. He ended up working in a department store among workers who had no idea of the scholar in their midst, yet they sensed that somehow the work environment was better; the bickering had stopped. Fred said this was this man's ministry.
We should strive to progress in how we respond to challenges by not despairing; find things for which to thank G-d and help those whom we can; marry and have kids; strive to be joyful and creative, and to even find meaning in our suffering (read Viktor Frankl's Man's Search For Meaning).
We're here to experience, learn, grow, serve, love and be joyful.
