The mountain being over their heads alludes to the spiritual gravity of heaven. In the physical we have the gravity of a black hole over our heads...the spiritual equivalent would be fear increased by the power of god becoming physical torment as in a living lightning bolt sucked from time and space,(lightning approaches the speed of light warping time and space), think being screwed out of the universe as water is screwed down a toilet bowl. Although there is no record of a soul being transformed into an unnatural living fire at that time...it is the sense of the potential which they perceived that "the dread of god could kill them". Up necessitates down, east west and eternal life necessitates eternal death. Since god existed become the universe it proves there is no time in eternity. When one approaches eternity from a relativity of time, or an eternal one approaches one in time, things change.
