In verse 16, it talks about someone called Gershon. I have an ancestor with this name. Could my ancestor Gershon have been descended from the Gershon in the verse? If descendants of Kohanim are surnamed Cohen and Cohn, does this also mean Jews who have the surnames of Levy, Levitin, Levin, and Levinsky have been from the Levites? Rashi's commentary on verse 23 says one seeking to marry a woman should first see what the character of her brothers. What is she's an only child, or has only sisters as Moses' wife Tzipporah did? In verse 24, it talks about Elkanah. Is this the same Elkanah who was the husband of Hannah and the father of Samuel? Reply

Gershom or Gershon is a very popular name. It does not connote any relation to the original.

The last names do not indicate the status of Kohain or Levi. Some are called Lewin, and they are Kohanim. You also find a Cohen, who is not Kohain.

If there are no siblings, there are no siblings.

No, it is not the same Elkana. There he was of the Tribe of Ephraim. Reply

Is there a connection between the need to leave Egypt after the passing of Joseph, who was essentially the High Priest, and the requirement for those accused of manslaughter to remain in the sanctuary cities until the death of the High Priest?

When Joseph died, the enslavement began. It only solidified after the last of the brothers died.
Joseph was not a high priest.

The idea of cities of refuge is only to protect those who killed inadvertently, and it only covers that the avenger may not kill him. Otherwise, the fellow has to work.

I understand your question. On this day in 27 Teves/Jan. 8 5784/2024, we learned this Chumash Portion and this section in Rambam. But they are not intrinsically connected. Reply

Noahide Laws In response to "You are a Special Rabbi" posted on Dec 23rd, the Noahide Laws are seven universal laws given by G-d to Noah and his descendants which would include all human beings ever to live. Six are “negative” commandments and the seventh is a “positive” commandment.

They are:
1. The prohibition of Idolatry.
2. The prohibition of Murder.
3. The prohibition of Theft.
4. The prohibition of Sexual immorality.
5. The prohibition of Blasphemy.
6. The prohibition of eating flesh taken from an animal while it is still alive.

This the first time I have been able to make a comment so I apologize about the length of my comment. It might be a long time before I post one again. This is not one of my strong points. L.O.L. I'm working on it.
I am very pleased to have the privilege to watch and listen to your daily lessons. I have been studying on the Chabad website for a few years now. I virtually never miss the daily lessons. I have been ill for quite some time so I am unable to go out. Hashem mercifully has brought the Synagogue into my home. The way that you teach has opened my eyes and ears on many levels. You are a great Rabbi and have a great sense of humor that help lighten up these heavy teachings. Thank you so much for touching my spirit with your Wisdom, dedication and energy.
Now my question is, what are the Noahit laws?
May Hashem bless you and your family for all the years of your lives

Confused Hello Rabbi, I don't understand how a man can marry his aunt but not his niece, and yet a woman can marry her uncle and not her nephew. If the man can marry his aunt but the aunt cannot marry her nephew how will they marry? Thank you.
