Rabbi Mendel Kaplan is the Spiritual Leader and Executive Director of Chabad Flamingo in Thornhill, Ontario, serving one of Canada’s most dynamic Jewish communities. He also serves as Chaplain of the York Regional Police Service. He is an active member of Toronto’s Vaad HaRabbanim (Council of Orthodox Rabbis), and a voting member of the COR Kashruth Council of Canada’s executive rabbinical board. Rabbi Kaplan is featured regularly on many local television and radio shows. He is a sought after speaker, with hundreds of lectures on Chabad.org. He and his wife, Faygie, are blessed with eight children. Artistically endowed, the rabbi enjoys drawing, sketching and creating charcoal portraits.

I listened to this with interest.
From a position of considerable ignorance, can I ask why there is so much reference to specific teachings, writings, laws and so on? So arguments and counter-arguments are set against each other but almost dryly and a little separated form humanity? I note of course that the "human" understanding is also present.
Is it not the case that one can seek guidance through prayer? Or does that make morality too subjective?
Please be assured that Christians are just as prone to rule quoting albeit tend not to be anything like as well informed in matters biblical in most cases!
You are correct. Laws and rules, cannot be determined by prayer at all, no more than any society's laws can be determined through prayer. May I steal today from this person - I will pray on it. Can I drive through a red light - I will pray on it. Just as the laws that society has are for society's benefit - so too G-d's laws, as elaborated on by our sages, are there for our benefit.
