I’m struggling to understand the idea that a person with a blemish can’t do the work of a Cohen in the beit hamikdash. A person’s true essence is their soul, not the body. This is a major concept in Judaism. So, how can it be that for such an important mitzvah, we say that you may be an incredible tzaddik, but you’re blind or have another physical disability and therefore can’t perform this mitzvah?
It doesn’t make sense to me.
Essentially, it’s like saying that the soul is what truly matters, but when it comes down to the most important/holiest thing, you have to be physically pure.
Please explain.
