That which a child is exposed to, even at the youngest age, has far-reaching effects on him, physically and spiritually. Modern science has also reached this conclusion, even concerning infants who are too young to understand what is going on around them. Therefore, it is important to surround a Jewish child with only holy sounds and images. Even if their minds do not understand it, their souls do. This is one of the reasons for the campaign to hang a shir hamaalos card on every newborn’s crib, and why there were those who would give their children only kosher animal toys to play with. In addition to the holy items every Jewish child has in his or her bedroom – a negel vasser cup and bowl, and a pair of tzitzis or a Shabbos candle – each child should also have in their room at least the following five items: a Five Books of Moses, a prayer book, a Passover Haggadah, a Book of Psalms and a charity box. |
