Why did Moses leave out from the Torah the name of the Pharaoh he was asking to let the Israelites go? Reply

Stephanie Wilson West Chicago February 25, 2025
in response to Steven:

I often wondered that myself! I wish I knew. Reply

John London February 25, 2025
in response to Steven:

Similar reason to why he left out the name of Joseph's Pharaoh ? Dynasties may not have been keen on preserving the names of previous ones. Reply

Pamela Hirsch Birmingham February 25, 2025
in response to Steven:

Apparently some scolars think the Pharaoh was King Ramses II. Maybe his name was left out so that the focus could be on Hashem and His chosen people. Reply

Raymond West Hollywood March 1, 2025
in response to Steven:

One of the core principles in Judaism is that G-d does not waste even a single word in the Torah. The fact that the name of Pharaoh is not mentioned, may be because it is not important to the narrative of the story going on. Also, the fact that the Pharaoh of Joseph's era is also not mentioned, may be because G-d wanted to leave the subject dubious as to whether the two Pharaoh's were two different people, or one and the same person Reply

John London March 2, 2025
in response to Raymond :

No Raymond, it's plain enough from the Torah that the Pharaoh of Joseph's era and of Moses's era were two different people, and probably not of the same dynasty: "Now there arose a new king over Egypt who knew not Joseph". Reply

Raymond West Hollywood September 10, 2025
in response to John:

No, John, it's plain enough to several classic Torah commentaries that the Pharaoh of Joseph's era and of Moses' era were one and the same person. That may seem counterintuitive, and yet there are examples in history of some benign rulers suddenly turning against our Jewish people Reply

Raymond West Hollywood February 19, 2025

I scored only 8/10. I did not realize that the Jewish women refused to comply with Pharoah's order to throw all of their sons into the Red Sea. Good for those Jewish women for having the courage to put their families ahead of government coercion. And the other question i got wrong, was a really careless mistake that i made. it was the question as to which of the Patriarchs never met a Pharoah. i answered Jacob, which is just absurd, as he obviously did once he found out that his son Joseph was still alive. There is even that very famous scene where Pharoah asks Jacob his age. he is motivated to do so because Jacob looks so old, due to the many hardships that he had in his life Reply

John London December 25, 2024
in response to Hal:

I think this Reed Sea is a shallower area adjoining the Red Sea, and, therefore can be referrer to as the Red Sea. Reply
