Be a Lamplighter
Disc 133, Program 531

Event Date: 13 Tammuz 5722 - July 15, 1962

When a chassid asked the Rebbe Rashab, “What is a chassid?” the Rebbe Rashab answered him, “A chassid is a lamplighter.” He has an obligation to ignite the spark in his fellow Jew’s G-dly soul.

Even when the other person seems too distant from Torah, the chassid must know that when his soul is kindled, he will realize the truth of his situation and begin to grow and develop. On the other hand, a person may be well-versed in Torah but lack a basic fear of G-d. Here, too, the chassid has a job to do.

I was only little when this story was translated for me from a Polish immigrant who lost her family and the whole town where she was raised. Sometimes oceans are treacherous & hard to navigate, sometimes there too many venomous snakes in the desert. How then could one lamp so far away complain about receiving the light from a battle damaged carrier? Reply

What a clear pronunciation of the yiddish language and subtitles are a great help to understand! Reply

I've heard several people refer to the Rebbe Rashab by a different name. The Rebbe does here too. I can't quite make it out. Verzeiden? What is it please? Reply

The "Admor Hazaken" is the Alter Rebbe, R' Shneur Zalman, the first Chabad Rebbe and author of the Tanya. Perhaps that is what you are referring to. Reply

The word you are talking about is most probably "נשמתו עדן Nishmato Eiden" which means his soul is in eiden there are explanations on this but don't want to say in case i am wrong, but there is a general rule that the Rebeim would call their predecessors predecessor with this title. Reply

Amazing This is how I feel after recently discovering my Jewish roots. G-d showed me that I was living in the desert and now I'm slowing going to the sea. My inner menorah is lit and am doing my best to keep it that way.
Beautiful lesson, todah rabah! Reply
