When saying the phrase vahavieinu leshalom,1 one first gathers together the two front tzitziyos; to these are added the one from the back left corner and then the one from the back right corner. All four are then held between the ring finger and little finger of the left hand.2
The tzitzis are kissed six times: when reciting the words tzitzis, tzitzis, letzitzis, emes, kayemes, and laad.
To Fill In the Background
Not only in This World below are the commandments fulfilled. The Sages also speak of how G‑d Himself, so to speak, fulfills His own commandments. This is hinted at in the verse,3 “He tells His words to Yaakov, His statutes and His ordinances to Yisrael.” In the words of the Midrash:4 “A man of flesh habitually tells others to do things, though he himself does not do them. Not so with the Holy One, blessed be He: what He Himself does, He commands the Jewish people to do and to observe.”
In this spirit, the Rebbe teaches that through our fulfillment of the mitzvah of tzitzis, whose four corners we gather together every morning, we hasten the fulfillment of this mitzvah by G‑d Himself — the ingathering of the Jewish people from the four corners of the earth.5
