5/10 but I’ve learned a lot today! Reply

I guessed 4 alright, actually I didn't have a clue concerning any of the questions - so sorry. Reply

Rivka Rachum WEST ORANGE July 10, 2026

9/10, and that was a careless mistake. To be honest, I expected this one to be harder than it was, but then, I spent a lot of time learning how to read a text with Rashi's tools. He is one of my favorite commentators! Reply

Raymond West Hollywood July 10, 2026
in response to Rivka Rachum:

I would say that the Rambam and Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch are my two favorite classic Torah commentators. Now, unfortunately, the Rambam did not write a systematic Torah commentary. However, enough of his writings discuss such issues enough that attempts have been made to put a kind of compilation of his Torah writings together to form a kind of overall Torah anthology. I also like Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch's very systematic Torah commentary because it strikes me as being so rational, so amenable to our everyday experiences and simple common sense, plus it is so comprehensive, as if his Torah commentary is all I really need. And among modern Torah commentaries, I really like the works of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, as his ideas are so profound, so humane, and all expressed in his almost Shakespearean-like mastery of the English language that it is simply breathtaking, music to my ears Reply

What are the "tools" about? Is it a book or a commentary on the Torah? Reply

Raymond West Hollywood July 12, 2026
in response to Erika:

I am pretty sure that by tools she means, Rashi's method of writing his Torah commentary Reply

Rashi understood Torah beyond the words written, and found relevant meanings. We must be grateful for example. that he added "do not kidnap" to the Statement do steal. When I learned Rashi it occurred to me that this he was brilliant, and questioned why those insights were no part of the Torah itself? Surely, there are many other insight that Rashi made, but it would have been easier for me to study without he added Rashi script that the publishers decided. It made it more difficult. to decipher. Why? Was that to difference it from Torah script itself? It frustrated me! 6/10 I consider that a triumph. Reply

Raymond West Hollywood July 10, 2026
in response to Feigue Cieplinski:

The Torah is written with as few words as possible, having only what is absolutely necessary to produce G-dly people if faithfully followed. The Talmud seeks to fill in the gaps, to include things not explicitly mentioned, but still hinted at, in the Torah itself Reply

Feigue Cieplinski Middletown July 12, 2026
in response to Raymond :

Raymond: Thanks. I knew that which you are explaining. My question referred to just the Rashi Script! Researching more, I found that it is derived from the typical Sephardi semi-cursive hand writing, When printed this is more useful because it is smaller ,and then less paper was used- as paper was so expensive in the beginning of printing. As times passed by, Rashi Script became the preferred one for commentaries respecting the Torah script as unique and sacred. Reply

Don't you think it is signicant that Rashi studied at Worms and Mrtin Luther started the reformation Movement in Worms by posting his 91 thesis. Reply

.....Worms.....I informed myself about....there is to consider a third person.....Nicholas of Lyra............Luther later had been antisemitic..... Reply

Raymond West Hollywood July 9, 2026
in response to Michael:

Maybe Rashi was attempting to bring spiritual light to a place that had been significantly darkened by the antisemitic Martin Luther Reply

4/10, but very difficult! Reply

Raymond West Hollywood July 8, 2026

I scored 8/10. I guessed wrong about where on a page of Talmud that Rashi's commentary can be found. Also, I am surprised to learn that Rashi did not invent, nor apparently even use, the script he is so famous for. Apparently, this alternate script was the complete invention of early publishers of the Talmud. If that is the case, then wow, learn something new every day Reply
