On another occasion the Tzemach Tzedek said: “At the seudah of Simchas Torah, while my grandfather’s Niggun of Four Themes was being sung before the Grace after Meals, I saw him and he said…” (For further details, see Sefer Tehillim Ohel Yosef Yitzchak, p. 210, et al.)
From these words (“I saw him”) it appears that the Alter Rebbe revealed himself to the Tzemach Tzedek not only when the latter was alone but also when he was in the company of others, even though he appeared to him alone and not to them. Note the teaching of the Sages which is cited by Rashi on the verse, “And He called to Moshe” (Vayikra 1:1).
