The letters that come on a necklace with a smaller letter next (left - because Hebrew is read from Right to left) would most likely be the word CHAI which means "Life" in English. The well known toast " l'chaim" uses that concept by wishing a person long good life as a blessing/prayer. I would assume the one who gave you the necklace is expressing their love by wishing you long life via the gift of such a necklace. The corresponding English sounds are bolded in the chart above so you know what the letter sounds like, i.e. the first letter which is the equivilant number 1, "aleph" Has the A bolded, letting you know that the letter bolded is the SOUND of that letter in English, i.e., the word SAM starts with a "s" sound (not "sh" which is another sound for a letter that can be pronounced S or SH depending on the grammatical vowel/modifyers attached to that letter) the letter on the chart would show you that "Sin" is the first Hebrew letter that is equivilant to Sam with the dot above it located on the left most stem of that letter. Interestingly, the word "Samuel" is an English translation of the Hebrew word "Shmuel" which in Hebrew is spelled with the "Shin" letter being first, so interestingly, a translation into other languages would not necessarily equate to the original translation of that same word ("lost in translation")? I'm doing the same thing and I bought a Primary Composition book by Mead from Amazon which has blue lines with a red baseline and a broken line in the middle of the lines. It's for grades K-2 but is perfect for all ages to practice writing an alphabet. It's fun and it gets you back in touch with your inner child. Reply
