David descends from Judah's princely line through Nachshon, Boaz, and Ruth. Samuel secretly anoints him king, while Saul, stricken with melancholy, is soothed by David's harp.

David slays the giant Goliath with a sling and stone, routing the Philistines. Saul then makes him his son-in-law and forges a bond with Jonathan.

Saul's jealousy of David turns deadly. David flees with Jonathan's help, and the two friends part in tears after renewing their vow of loyalty.

David flees Saul through Nob, Gath, and the wilderness, twice sparing the king's life. Samuel dies. David weds Abigail and settles among the Philistines in Ziklag.

Death of King Saul

Saul, defeated by the Philistines as Samuel's spirit foretold, falls on his sword at Gilboa alongside Jonathan; David mourns them both in a heartfelt lament.
