I have taken to heart Rabbi Kaplan's words about making our home a comfortable place for our kids to bring their friends. In the Stone edition of the Chumash, the commentary for Haftaras Nasso discusses how child rearing-involves parent rearing, and I could use some parent-rearing for doing better at creating an uplifting home for my daughter's friends. Some ideas come to mind are consistently kissing mezuzahs as we transition throughout the house, being sure to say the blessings as we eat and drink, and, having meaningful conversations with her friends. Instead of the rote school and college talk I could ask about favorite Jewish holidays, performing mitzvahs and gently inquire about pleasant memories of their upbringing. Thanks Rabbi Kaplan.
