water is a metaphore for torah Dear Mary,

Every Jew has a neshama, a soul from G-d. this soul is thirsty to study torah.
No doubt your family's need to be near water was their soul calling out for Torah.

A lake a Mikvah too? I'm from an assimilated Jewish family but I have returned. When you talked about being immersed into water to become holy I started to realize my grandparents, parents and now I seem attracted to water so much so either we lived beside a lake or had a cottage. We talk about needing and a strong attraction to be near water to swim all the time. Is there a connection there? Reply
