I have been taught that when the shamash string is longer then the others it should not be cut even because once the proper knots are tied, the tzitzis are now קדשה and should not be clipped. Others have said the shamash may be clipped, but not with metal tools( which could be forged into a weapon Reply

Interesting how you say a person who puts the blue cord on the tzitzit is either not educated or believes in an animal when crushed produces a blue dye. Ha Shem himself commanded the addition of the blue cord in Toldot 15:38. Maybe that is why they put said cord on it. Shall we obey man or shall we obey G-d? Reply

Whoever said techeiles is definitely blue? See Rashi on parashas hatzitzis D”H pesil techeiles who seems to say that it’s more of a greenish-yellow color. There are more proofs that way in Talmud. Reply

I suppose that Jewish scholarship has said techeiles is blue, crimson bordering on black, and purple. My Chumash, sitting in front of me now, clearly states, and I quote, “techeiles, blue wool. One of the strings of each fringe is to be dyed blue with the blood of an aquatic creature known as chilazon (Rashi). Techeiles has been unavailable since the time of the Talmud.” Page 110 Schottenstein Edition 2007. Outside of authorized Jewish scholarship, the Jewish translators of the Tanak into Greek 1300 years before Rashi was born seemed to believe that is was in the blue family as well. My response earlier was to an unfounded assertion on the part of Joe Lipinski claiming that people who put a blue cord in the tzitzit are uneducated or believed that the animal is in existence. Neither of those two claims is true. Once again, people put a blue cord on the tzitzit because most, if not all Jewish scholarship agreed, up to and including Rashi that it was in the blue family.
