A Jew might sometimes feel that he stands alone against the world around him. So even before reassuring him that there are indeed many others with him – above all, G-d Himself – we tell him the story of Noah: There was an entire generation in which there lived only one solitary righteous individual. But he overcame, and built a new world and a new way of life.

A Jew is commanded to serve G-d “with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might.” If so, one might ask, shouldn’t one always strive for the way that requires the most effort possible?
