Elul is a month of reflection, introspection, and repentance. Some in the rabbinate, in their desire to lead their fellow Jews to improve during this auspicious time, tend to focus on the negative.

The verse commands: “You shall surely rebuke your fellow.” Nevertheless, one must deliver the rebuke joyfully, good-naturedly, and gently.

The month of Elul is a time for repentance and introspection before the coming of Rosh Hashanah. Yet there are some who use this time of year to chastise their congregations instead of inspiring them.
