Dear Friend,

Ahhh, the smell of macaroons is in the air. Passover is early this year. Or March is late.

Our holidays have a delightful way of skipping about, yet never straying too far. We Jews keep our lunar calendar on a short leash, even adding an occasional extra month to balance things out. The reason is Passover. The original Passover—the one when we left Egypt—was in the spring, and we are to keep it there. So, while the moon, with her constant waxing and waning, dictates our months, the sun, and his seasons, keeps those months in place. What we land up with is a Judaism that expects us, like the calendar, to be flexible and ever-changing, yet consistent. Challenging, yes, but so was escaping slavery. Of course, we had help. But, hey, we still do, right?

Speaking of days that jump around, this Friday (March 22) will be proclaimed by President Obama as Education and Sharing Day. This national holiday is held each year on the Hebrew birthday of the Rebbe, of righteous memory, who dedicated his life to education.

One more thing: If you are hosting a Seder, invite another guest. Be flexible, remember? And if you are still looking for a Seder, here you go. Seriously, you gotta go to a Seder. Consistency. See, even after two tangents I managed to tie it all back together. High five.
