8/10 I believe that the answer to question #2 should be true! The question said true or false only men can be prophets! I answered true! In my humble opinion, women are not called prophets! But are called prophetess! and after the answer was revealed!! it says read who were the seven prophetesses! So can someone please clarify for me, why my answer was incorrect! Thank you Rabbi Posner for another wonderful quizzes! Shalom. Reply

in response to Yulanda:

Yulanda, your answer was incorrect to the question the Rabbi meant to ask, but correct to the question he did ask. It is also in Biblical Hebrew that a lady who prophesies is never called a prophet, but only always, if anything at all (Hannah was not given a prophetic title at all), a prophetess. Reply

8 - I didn't know the shortest book in the Tanach, but then I haven't read all of the books yet, so I likely wouldn't. Also didn't know that Ezekiel wasn't a native Israelite. At least that seems to be the implication of having him prophesy only in Aramaic. That would make him a prophet to some other group, yeah? Reply

John London June 25, 2024
in response to Jack:

No, Jack, Ezekiel prophesied in Hebrew (and his being the son of Buzi does not mean that his father was a drunk). It was Daniel, who prophesied and wrote n Aramaic for the Babylonians and in Hebrew for the Jews. Ezra the priest also wrote part of his book in Aramaic, using Hebrew orth9ography. Reply

SULE OBOZUWA Lagos, Nigeria June 21, 2024

8/10 a very good score! But question 2 is quite confusing as only males are called Prophets and females called Prophetess. I did fail the number 2 and 5 (Did not know Daniel prophesied in Aramaic). Keep up the good job you are doing. Shalom Reply

John London June 21, 2024
in response to SULE OBOZUWA:

And that is so in the original Hebrew too. It's not that question 2, as framed, is confusing, it's clear enough. It's that the official answer is correct only for the wording that the setter should have used ("True or False: Only men can prophesy (under the inspiration of G-d)"), not the wording he actually used. I missed the question regarding Daniel. I thought he wasn't a prophet because he was 2nd in command to a foreign king. I thought prophets answered only to G-d! Reply

John London June 21, 2024
in response to INGA Y JONES-SULLIVAN:

Prophets do/did indeed answer only to G-d for the content and delivery of their prophecies and for things that G-d commanded them directly to do. But for other things they answered to the party under whose remit these other things came, e.g., David to Saul, and Abraham and Isaac to Abimelech for their conduct, and Joseph to Pharaoh.for the way he governed. 10/10 Baruch Ha Shem Reply

John London June 20, 2024

1. Aren't the Elijah who is to come (as prophesied by Malachi) and Mosiach greater prophets than Moses?

2. Doesn't Biblical Hebrew distingush sharply between prophets and prophetesses? Women prophesy, but they cannot be prophets (and Hannah, the first person to prophesy a Divinely appointed King isn't even called a prophetess). Reply

Yvonne Rockledge June 20, 2024

10/10 ! The books of the prophets are my favorites books. The vision and works of the prophets inspire me. My favorite prophet is Elijah who, while running for his life from Jezebel, asked the Lord that he might die. It is a poignant paradox. In his great works he reveals that G-d made him human just like the rest of us.
I hope these quizzes never end. Reply

Pauline England June 20, 2024

Was pleased to get 8/10 as this wasn’t a strong topic for me. Reply

Rudolf June 20, 2024

The prophet quiz's last question seems to warrant some clarification: if the word "longest" refers to the number of chapters, Isaiah clearly wins; Isaiah contains 66 chapters, which is more than Jeremiah's 52 chapters. But the number of words, and characters, in Jeremiah seems to be larger, which would turn Jeremiah into the longest prophetic work (if considering the overall text size)... Reply

in response to Yochanan:

Mit allem gebührenden Respekt, yours is a terrible prejudice. I was Jewish; I am now a Christian. Furthermore, the entirety is the Tanakh, which is short for Torah, Nevim, Ketuvim, NOT only the Five Books of Moses.

Writing hate, even thinly disguised,
is not becoming to anyone, not to Gentiles nor to the Jewish People. Reply
