The sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (1880-1950), recalled:

As a young child, I was once staring intently out of the window of our home. My tutor, (the famed chassid Rabbi Shmuel Betzalel Sheftel, known as "Rashbatz"), noticed my rapt look and summoned me to him. His words made a deep and lasting impression on me.

"Always remember, Yosef Yitzchak," said my teacher, "that it is better to be on the outside looking in, than on the inside looking out..."
