The students of the Maggid of Mezritch were immersed in discussing the profound mystical concepts that their Rebbe had taught that morning. Amongst them sat Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi.

One student raised a thought-provoking question. “How would you create the world if you were G‑d?”

The students contemplated quietly and prepared their answers.

“If I were G‑d, I would have changed this and this!” responded the first.

“But if I were G‑d, I would have changed that and that!” answered another.

Each student pointed out faults in the world, arguing that they should be eliminated.

When Rabbi Schneur Zalman was asked for a response, he innocently replied, “If I were G‑d, I would have created the world just as it is!”
