One of the earliest Chasidic texts, Tzavoas Harivash, is a manual of insights and guidance culled from the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov and his successor, Rabbi Dovber of Mezritch. Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, known as the Alter Rebbe, was their foremost student and the founder of Chabad, and is known for his seminal work, the Tanya.

special ‘thank you’ from myself, in addition to the ‘thank you’ which Tanya’s author, the Alter
Rebbe, gives. And if you become aware of a community of Jews who are lacking in their lives
the blessing that comes with having had a Tanya printed in their vicinity, print one there also.”

Tanya begins with a passage from the Talmud: “An oath is administered to the soul before it is born into the world: Be righteous and be not wicked.” The root of the Hebrew word for “oath” connotes not only G-d’s entreaty to the soul; it reveals that through this oath, G-d fills the soul with brimming capacity to accomplish its mission below.
