King Jeroboam II of Israel: Son of King Jehoash. Reigned from 646-608 BCE. A strong king, he expanded Israel's borders as Jonah had prophesied. Jeroboam banished the prophet Amos from his kingdom for prophesying concerning Israel's exile.
Jeroboam II ruled forty years, recovering lost lands and Damascus. Israel enjoyed economic prosperity, but moral standards collapsed and idolatry spread.
Amos chastised Israel for their sins, injustice, and oppression of the poor. He stepped into Bethel to announce G-d's punishment and predict exile.

Commerce was flourishing, and many Jews had made their way to riches. Spiritually, however, there was much to be desired.
