Parshah Thought: Matot

“When light reflects darkness -historical hypocrisy" Sounds like my experience amongst a certain Jewish group... and it sounds like the septicemic disease that has been endemic within the tribe of Israel from at least its departure from Egypt. Living a Torah Life is remarkable and praiseworthy but the judgmental and condemning attitude of "thinking oneself better than others" because one believes oneself to be more structured, disciplined, and hereditarily well adjusted to the social expectations that dominates Torah life and/or secular life is in fact sophistic and counter-intuitive to G-d's Prescription for a holy state of mind and for Tikkun Olam. Yet this attitude is as much a part of dark Jewish history as it is common today. It is unholy, self deceptive, and hypocritical to practice a condemnation that stems purely from self love or to practice a condemnation that stems purely from a confidence that is rooted in condescending arrogance, both of which can be easily found amongst certain groups, powerful or otherwise, within the tribe of Israel today.
