Learning the aleph-bet Hillel used the argument that to read the written text requires us to have been taught the aleph-bet orally. But isn't it possible that someone could decipher a written language without any oral tradition, in the same way that a scholar of ancient languages can decode ancient script - using the frequency and placement of words as clues? Reply

Audibility I listened to, learned from, and enjoyed greatly the first lecture in Rabbi Gurkow's series on the Oral Tradition. Unfortunately, some of the readings and questions from the audience were not clear. Could the Rabbi repeat the unmiked portions of future lectures? Reply
