How do we discern true regret (i.e. wishing that the sin was never committed) to false ones (i.e. I am now satisfied so now I needn't commit the sin anymore)? Once a person is satiated from sinning, he could very well say and even convince himself that he wishes that he had never sinned, though this level of regret would surely be inadequate. Then he would have to then wait to be tested, in which case he would not retain the capacity to initiate and complete Teshuva.
