The third Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn of Lubavitch (1789-1866), was born on the 29th of Elul. Orphaned from his mother at age 3, he was raised by his maternal grandfather, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. Rabbi Menachem Mendel assumed the leadership of Chabad in 1827, upon the passing of his father-in-law and uncle, Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch. Extremely active in communal affairs, he established and funded Jewish farming colonies which provided a livelihood for thousands of families. He also stood at the forefront of the battle against the "Enlightenment Movement" which, with the support of the Czarist regime, sought to destroy traditional Jewish life -- a battle which earned him no less than 22 (!) imprisonments and arrests. In the course of his lifetime, Rabbi Menachem Mendel penned more than 48,000 pages of Chassidic teachings and Halachic exegesis. He is known as the "Tzemach Tzeddek" ("a sprouting of righteousness") after his work of Halachic responsa by that name.

Today is the fifth day of Creation, when G‑d created the animals of the sea and the birds:

G‑d said, “Let the waters swarm a swarming of living creatures, and let birds fly over the earth, across the expanse of the heavens.” …G‑d saw that it was good. G‑d blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply upon the earth.” It was evening, and it was morning, a fifth day. (Genesis 1:20–23)

In the fourth year of the reign of King Zedekiah, Jeremiah prophesied that Jerusalem would ultimately fall to Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah ch. 27). A false prophet named Hananiah son of Azur contradicted his words, claiming that in two years’ time, the precious vessels Nebuchadnezzar had ransacked four years prior would be returned.

While wishing that this “prophecy” would indeed come true, Jeremiah warned the people that Hananiah was a false prophet, and foretold that he would die that same year. Indeed, Hananiah died on 29 Elul, the last day of the year (Jeremiah ch. 28).

Laws and Customs

Today is the last day of the Jewish year, and a day of preparation for Rosh Hashanah ("Head of the Year") which commences this evening.

A more lengthy version of the Selichot ("supplication") prayers are recited in the early morning hours, before the morning prayers.

Tachnun (confession of sins) and similar prayers are omitted.

The Shofar is not sounded on the day before Rosh Hashanah, to separate between the shofar soundings of the month of Elul (which are a minhag, or "custom") and the Rosh Hashanah soundings, which are a biblically ordained mitzvah, divine commandment).

Following the morning services, Hatarat Nedarim, the annulment of vows, is performed (the text for this procedure is found in most prayer books).

It is customary visit the the graves of the righteous on this day and pray there, as the resting place of a righteous person is an opportune place to beseech the Almighty.

The festival of Rosh Hashanah, marking the start of a new Jewish year, begins this evening at sunset.

Upon the conclusion of the evening prayers in the synagogue, we extend to one another greetings of Leshana Tovah Tekatev Vitechatem, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." In the evening meal, we eat apple dipped in honey, the head of a fish, pomogranates , tzimmes (sweet carrots) and other foods signifying a sweet and successful year.

As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see "Today in Jewish History" for Elul 1) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah ("return" to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all."

Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is also the time to have one's tefillin and mezuzot checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use.

Daily Thought

You murmured in your tents, saying, '"Because G‑d hates us, He took us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to exterminate us." (Deuteronomy 1:27)

Really, He loves you, but you despised Him. As the common saying goes, “Whatever is in your heart towards your friend, you imagine he feels towards you.” (Rashi)

Often we justify our own feelings by projecting them on others, twisting the entire relationship backward and upside-down.

We can’t get our way, so we say, “I’m doing everything to accommodate them, and they’re being so stubborn.”

And they say, “But it’s just the opposite! You won't give an inch!”

We don’t want to be around people, so we feel, “I’m trying to be nice to them, but they don’t want me around.”

And they say, “We would love to have you around, but you don’t seem to want to be here with us.”

In just the same way, we project our own feelings on the One who made us, attempting to twist truth inside-out.

We become absorbed with our own little world and can’t find room for G‑d within it, so we feel, “All I am to G-d is just an ugly little cockroach messing up His universe.”

How does G‑d feel?

There, with G‑d, is the true reality.

That He gives you life and all things He knows are good for you and awaits the time you will recognize how good it all is.

That He showers you with love, and awaits the time that you will return that love to Him.

That He eagerly awaits every word of your prayers, treasures every mitzvah you might do, kisses every word of Torah that comes from your lips—but you have no idea how precious you are to Him.

You may push back. You may run away. But just one small turn, and He’s there waiting.

Run from your delusions. Embrace reality. Reality is love.
