SECTION 516 The Laws [Governing] which Objects are Permitted to be Sent on a Festival (1-6)
סימן תקטז דִּין אֵיזֶה דְבָרִים מֻתָּרִים לִשְׁלוֹחַ בְּיוֹם טוֹב וּבוֹ ו' סְעִיפִים:
1 On a festival, it is permitted to send through a public domain any type of food or drink that is fit [to be consumed] on the day [of the festival.1 This applies] even if [the food or drink] would only be fit [for consumption] if [the recipient] would perform an action affecting the very body [of the objects sent], for example, a live domesticated or undomesticated animal or fowl.1 [Although these living beings] are not fit [to be eaten on the festival] until they are slaughtered, nevertheless, since it is permitted to slaughter [them] on the festival,2 it is permitted to send them to one’s friend.
[This license is granted] even though one knows that one’s friend will not slaughter [the animals] on the festival. Nevertheless, since were [the recipient] to so desire, he could slaughter [the animals] and partake of them, it is permitted to send them to him.
א מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ לַחֲבֵרוֹ בְּיוֹם טוֹב א דֶּרֶךְ רְשׁוּת הָרַבִּיםב כָּל מִינֵי מַאֲכָל וּמַשְׁקֶה הָרְאוּיִים לְבוֹ בַיּוֹם,1 אֲפִלּוּ אֵינָן רְאוּיִים אֶלָּא עַל יְדֵי מַעֲשֶׂה שֶׁיַּעֲשׂוּ בְּגוּפָן, כְּגוֹן בְּהֵמָה וְחַיָּה וָעוֹף חַיִּיםג1 שֶׁאֵינָן רְאוּיִים עַד שֶׁיִּשְׁחָטֵם, מִכָּל מָקוֹם, כֵּיוָן שֶׁמֻּתָּר לִשְׁחוֹט בְּיוֹם טוֹבד2 – מֻתָּר גַּם כֵּן לִשְׁלוֹחַ לַחֲבֵרוֹ, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהוּא יוֹדֵעַ שֶׁחֲבֵרוֹ לֹא יִשְׁחָטֵם בְּיוֹם טוֹב,ה מִכָּל מָקוֹם, כֵּיוָן שֶׁאִלּוּ הָיָה רוֹצֶה הָיָה שׁוֹחֲטָן וְאוֹכְלָן – מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ לוֹ.

2 Similarly, it is permitted to send to [a friend] any utensil, and also fabrics, even if they are not yet sewn.1 [Sending such fabrics is permitted even though they have not been sewn into garments] because they are fit to lean upon. Even a fabric containing kilayim3 is permitted to be sent if it is firm4 and thus it is permitted to sit upon it or lean against it, as stated in Yoreh Deah, sec. 301;5 consult that source.
ב וְכֵן מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ לוֹ כָּל כְּלִי תַשְׁמִישׁ, וְכֵן בְּגָדִים אֲפִלּוּ אֵינָן תְּפוּרִין עֲדַיִן,ו1 לְפִי שֶׁהֵן רְאוּיִין לִשָּׁעֵן עֲלֵיהֶם.ז וַאֲפִלּוּ בֶּגֶד כִּלְאַיִם3 מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַח אִם הוּא קָשֶׁהט4 בְּעִנְיָן שֶׁמֻּתָּר לֵישֵׁב וְלִשָּׁעֵן עָלָיו,י כְּמוֹ שֶׁיִּתְבָּאֵר בְּיוֹרֶה דֵעָה סִמָּן ש"איא5 עַיֵּן שָׁם.
3 It is even permitted to send on a festival objects that are not fit [to be used on] the day [of the festival] if they are fit [to be used] on a weekday.1 without performing an action that affects their very body,6 for example, tefillin7or the like. [Such items may] even [be sent] through the public domain. True, [on a festival,] it is [otherwise] forbidden to transfer any article that one does not need on the festival [from a private domain to a public domain], and that is being transferred only for the sake of a weekday, as explained in sec. 495[:4]. Nevertheless, [in this instance,] since [the sender] derives pleasure and joy from sending presents to his friend, doing so is [considered as contributing to] rejoicing of the festival.8
ג וַאֲפִלּוּ דָּבָר שֶׁאֵינוֹ רָאוּי לְבוֹ בַיּוֹם, אִם הוּא רָאוּי לֵהָנוֹת מִמֶּנּוּ בְּחֹליב1 בְּלִי שֶׁיִּצְטָרֵךְ לַעֲשׂוֹת מַעֲשֶׂה בְּגוּפוֹ, ,יג6 כְּגוֹן תְּפִלִּיןיד7 וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָהֶםטו – מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ בְּיוֹם טוֹב אֲפִלּוּ דֶּרֶךְ רְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים.טז וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאָסוּר לְהוֹצִיא שׁוּם דָּבָר שֶׁאֵינוֹ צָרִיךְ לוֹ בְּיוֹם טוֹב וְאֵינוֹ מוֹצִיאוֹ אֶלָּא לְצֹרֶךְ הַחֹל כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּתְבָּאֵר בְּסִמָּן תצ"ה,יז מִכָּל מָקוֹם, כֵּיוָן שֶׁהוּא נֶהֱנֶה וְשָׂמֵחַ בְּמַה שֶּׁמְּשַׁלֵּחַ דּוֹרוֹנוֹת לַחֲבֵרוֹ – הֲרֵי זֶה צֹרֶךְ שִׂמְחַת יוֹם טוֹב.יח8
4 However, [on a festival,] it is forbidden to send an object that is not fit to be used even on a weekday unless one performs an action (that is forbidden to be performed on the festival) with them, for example, types of grain1 that are not usually cooked whole, but rather are ground and bread is made from them ([since] grinding is forbidden on a festival).9 However, it is permitted to send types of beans1 that are usually cooked whole without grinding [since] they are fit [to be used] even on the day [of the festival]. Needless to say, is permitted to send wines, oils, and types of flour.1
ד אֲבָל אָסוּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ דָּבָר שֶׁאַף בְּחֹל אֵינוֹ רָאוּי עַד שֶׁיַּעֲשׂוּ בּוֹ מַעֲשֶׂה (הָאֲסוּרָה לַעֲשׂוֹת בְּיוֹם טוֹב),יט כְּגוֹן מִינֵי תְבוּאָה כ, 1 שֶׁאֵין דֶּרֶךְ לְבַשְּׁלָן שְׁלֵמִים כא אֶלָּא טוֹחֲנִין אוֹתָן כב וְעוֹשִׂין מֵהֶם פַּת (וּטְחִינָה אֲסוּרָה בְּיוֹם טוֹב כג, 9). אֲבָל מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ מִינֵי קִטְנִיּוֹת כד, 1 שֶׁדֶּרֶךְ לְבַשְּׁלָן שְׁלֵמִים בְּלֹא טְחִינָה, כה וַהֲרֵי הֵן רְאוּיִין אֲפִלּוּ לְבוֹ בַיּוֹם. וְאֵין צָרִיךְ לוֹמַר שֶׁמֻּתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ יֵינוֹת וּשְׁמָנִים וּסְלָתוֹת, כו, 1
5 All [the above restrictions] apply when one sends [a present] via the public domain or via a karmelis,10 [i.e.,] a place where it is forbidden to carry on Shabbos and also on a festival [when one] is not [carrying] for the sake of the festival at all. However, when one sends [a present] via a place in which it is permitted to carry on Shabbos, for example, [from house to house] in one courtyard or in a city where there is an eruv, it is permitted to send anything, even types of grain and the like, [provided] they are entities that are permitted to be carried.
ה וְכָל זֶה כְּשֶׁמְּשַׁלֵּחַ דֶּרֶךְ רְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים, אוֹ (א) דֶרֶךְ כַּרְמְלִית שֶׁהוּא מָקוֹם שֶׁאָסוּר לְטַלְטֵל בּוֹ בְּשַׁבָּת, וְגַם בְּיוֹם טוֹב שֶׁלֹּא לְצֹרֶךְ יוֹם טוֹב כְּלָל,10 אֲבָל כְּשֶׁמְּשַׁלֵּחַ דֶּרֶךְ מָקוֹם שֶׁמֻּתָּר לְטַלְטֵל בּוֹ בְּשַׁבָּת, כְּגוֹן בְּחָצֵר אַחַת אוֹ בְּעִיר הַמְעֹרֶבֶת – מֻתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ כָּל דָּבָר, אֲפִלּוּ מִינֵי תְבוּאָה וְכַיּוֹצֵא בָהֶם מִדְּבָרִים הַמֻּתָּרִים בְּטִלְטוּל. כז
6 Any article that one is permitted to send on a festival should not be sent [by a group of people walking] in a shurah, i.e., [a group of] three people1 carrying one type of [food] and proceeding as one, one after the other in one line.11 [This is forbidden] so that [the person sending the food] does not follow a weekday practice, because this is demeaning to the festival.12
Therefore, even in a place where it is permitted to carry on Shabbos, for example, in a courtyard or in a lane where there is an eruv, if many people are found there,13 it is forbidden14 [to send a present in this manner] because this is demeaning to the festival. However, if each person is carrying [only] one type [of food], it is permitted [to send such a present],15 even in the public domain.16
ו כָּל דָּבָר שֶׁמֻּתָּר לִשְׁלוֹחַ בְּיוֹם טוֹב – לֹא יְשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ בְּשׁוּרָה,1 דְּהַיְנוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה בְּנֵי אָדָם כח נוֹשְׂאִין מִין אֶחָד כט וְהֵן הוֹלְכִין כֻּלָּן (ב) כְּאֶחָד זֶה אַחַר זֶה ל בְּשׁוּרָה אַחַת,11 שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲשֶׂה כְּדֶרֶךְ שֶׁהוּא עוֹשֶׂה בְּחֹל לא מִשּׁוּם זִלְזוּל יוֹם טוֹב. לב, 12 לְפִיכָךְ אֲפִלּוּ בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁמֻּתָּר לְטַלְטֵל בּוֹ בְּשַׁבָּת, כְּגוֹן בְּחָצֵר לג אוֹ בְּמָבוֹי הַמְעֹרָב, אִם (ג) רַבִּים מְצוּיִין שָׁם13 – אָסוּר14 מִשּׁוּם זִלְזוּל יוֹם טוֹב, אֲבָל אִם כָּל אֶחָד נוֹשֵׂא מִין אֶחָד – מֻתָּר לד, 15 אֲפִלּוּ בִּרְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים. לה, 16
