When the Jewish people camped at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah and the Ten Commandments, they were so unified that they were considered to be like one person.

Unity is integral to success. If a group of people set out with one goal, but they are at odds with each other, they are unlikely to reach their objective.

This is why unity was necessary for the Jews to receive the Torah. The world needed to be purified before the Torah could be given, and that was possible only if the Jews worked towards purifying the world as one group with one goal. Whenever a group of people set out to accomplish something, they must do it with complete unity.

  • Why do you think that unity is necessary for a group of people to accomplish something?
  • Share an example of when you accomplished something as part of a unified group.
  • Give an example of where a lack of unity resulted in a lack of success (a popular story, an example from the Torah, etc.).
  • In honor of your bar/bat mitzvah, what can you do to promote Jewish unity?
