"In the beginning G‑d created the heaven and the earth…G‑d's spirit moved on the water's surface… G‑d said 'let there be light' and light came into existence.
The creation of light, as well as the world, is considered to be a continuous process, renewed daily. Every day G‑d is said to open the gates of the east and break open the windows of the heavens, bestowing light to the world and its inhabitants (Shabbat morning prayer). Rays of blue-tinged light, created with strong strokes of a palette knife, create a firm yet transparent channel. The ethereal light breaks through with radiant energy from the watery rakia (vault of heaven). Every day is a new beginning.
Light is good said G d and he was pleased with it. One rises early and washes his face and hands and goes to his prayer closet facing the East. Light gives life to all G d’s creations and nature needs light to allow the earth to flourish with food to feed us, trees to give us shade and a place for the creatures to make their homes. Without G d’s light all would be dead. All of us should praise G d on a daily basis for his light and never take it for granted.
