Intermediate Talmud: Lesson 28: Don't Split Up the Group
In this class, we begin a new Mishnah, the discussion of which centers around the idea that when individuals convene for a meal, they may not go their own ways without joining for the group recitation of the Grace After Meals.

I'm a little confused. During the last 12 minutes of the lesson Rabbi Mendel Kaplan makes the point that the three individuals that left their groups and formed a new group of three are not obligated to make a mezuman. Thereafter, he mentions, that although they're not obligated they should do the right thing and make a mezuman anyway.
Towards the end of the lesson, Rabbi Mendel Kaplan states that the new group of three no longer have an obligation to make a mezuman and they can no longer do so.
I would appreciate your help in clarifying whether the new group of three have the option to make a mezuman or not.
