| 1And it came to pass in the fourth year of King Darius; The word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth of the ninth month, in Kislev. |

אוַֽיְהִי֙ בִּשְׁנַ֣ת אַרְבַּ֔ע לְדַֽרְיָ֖וֶשׁ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ הָיָ֨ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־זְכַרְיָ֗ה בְּאַרְבָּעָ֛ה לַחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַתְּשִׁעִ֖י בְּכִסְלֵֽו: |
| 2And Sharezer and Regem Melech and his men sent to Bethel to pray before the Lord, |
|
בוַיִּשְׁלַח֙ בֵּֽית־אֵ֔ל שַׁרְאֶ֕צֶר וְרֶ֥גֶם מֶ֖לֶךְ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֑יו לְחַלּ֖וֹת אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| And Sharezer and Regem Melech and his men sent to Bethel. They were righteous men, and they sent [word] to their kinsmen in Bethel to come to pray before the Lord in Jerusalem for them, and to ask the priests to let them know if they should [still] weep in the month of Av, since the Temple had been rebuilt. |
|
וישלח בית אל שראצר ורגם מלך ואנשיו.
אנשים צדיקים היו ושלחו מבבל לקרוביהם שבבית אל לבא לחלות את פני ה' בירושלים בעדם ולשאול מאת הכהנים להודיעם אם יבכו בחדש אב אחרי אשר חזר הבית להבנות:

| 3to say to the Priests of the house of the Lord of Hosts and to the prophets, saying, "Shall I weep in the fifth month, abstaining as I have done these many years?" |
|
גלֵאמֹ֗ר אֶל־הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ לְבֵֽית־יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת וְאֶל־הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר הַֽאֶבְכֶּה֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַֽחֲמִשִׁ֔י הִנָּזֵ֕ר כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתִי זֶ֖ה כַּמֶּ֥ה שָׁנִֽים: |
| abstaining. To abstain from pleasure, as I have done these seventy years. The word נְזִירָה always means separation. |
|
הנזר.
לפרוש מן התענוג כאשר עשיתי זה שבעים שנה אין נזירה בכל מקום אלא פרישות:

| 4And the word of the Lord of Hosts came to me, saying: |
|
דוַיְהִ֛י דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 5Say to all the people of the land and to the priests saying: When you fasted and mourned in the fifth [month] and in the seventh [month] even these seventy years, did you fast for Me, even for Me? |
|
האֱמֹר֙ אֶל־כָּל־עַ֣ם הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאֶל־הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר כִּֽי־צַמְתֶּ֨ם וְסָפ֜וֹד בַּֽחֲמִישִׁ֣י וּבַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י וְזֶה֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה הֲצ֥וֹם צַמְתֻּ֖נִי אָֽנִי: |
| and in the seventh [month]. That is the fast of Gedaliah. |
|
ובשביעי.
הוא צום גדליה:
|
| did you fast for Me, even for Me. The ‘he’ is vowelized with a ‘hataf pattah’ because it is used as the interrogative: Did you fast in My honor that you should be required to fast now, too? |
|
הצום צמתוני אני.
ה"א נקודה חטף פתח לפי שהיא משמשת ל' תמיהא שמא לכבודי צמתם שתהיו צריכים לצום גם עתה:
|
| 6And when you eat and when you drink-are you not the ones who eat and you the ones who drink? |
|
ווְכִ֥י תֹֽאכְל֖וּ וְכִ֣י תִשְׁתּ֑וּ הֲלֹ֚א אַתֶּם֙ הָאֹ֣כְלִ֔ים וְאַתֶּ֖ם הַשֹּׁתִֽים: |
| And when you eat and when you drink. And, if you do not fast, that, too, means nothing to Me. Are not the food and the drink for your own pleasure? |
|
וכי תאכלו וכי תשתו.
ואם לא תצומו מה לי גם בזו הלא אתם להנאתכם הוא המאכל והמשתה:
|
| 7Was it not the words that the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets, when Jerusalem was settled and tranquil, and its cities were around it, and the Negev and the lowland were settled? |
|
זהֲלֹ֣א אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר קָרָ֚א יְהֹוָה֙ בְּיַד֙ הַנְּבִיאִ֣ים הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֔ים בִּֽהְי֚וֹת יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ ישֶׁ֣בֶת וּשְׁלֵוָ֔ה וְעָרֶ֖יהָ סְבִֽיבֹתֶ֑יהָ וְהַנֶּ֥גֶב וְהַשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה יֹשֵֽׁב: |
| Was it not the words. Who caused you the fast and the mourning? Was it not the words of reproof that the Lord proclaimed, etc.? They brought about your destruction, and therefore you fasted. And these are the words that He proclaimed: Execute true judgment. |
|
הלא את הדברים.
מי גרם לכם הצום והמספד הלא דברי תוכחות אשר קרא ה' וגו' הם החריבו אתכם ועל כן צמתם ואלה הדברים אשר קרא משפט אמת שפטו:

| 8And the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying: |
|
חוַיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־זְכַרְיָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 9So said the Lord of Hosts, saying: Execute true judgment and perform loving-kindness and mercy, each one [of you] to his brother. |
|
טכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת לֵאמֹ֑ר מִשְׁפַּ֚ט אֱמֶת֙ שְׁפֹ֔טוּ וְחֶ֣סֶד וְרַֽחֲמִ֔ים עֲשׂ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ אֶת־אָחִֽיו: |
| 10Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the stranger, or the poor man. Neither shall any of you think evil against his brother in your heart. |
|
יוְאַלְמָנָ֧ה וְיָת֛וֹם גֵּ֥ר וְעָנִ֖י אַֽל־תַּֽעֲשֹׁ֑קוּ וְרָעַת֙ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֔יו אַל־תַּחְשְׁב֖וּ בִּלְבַבְכֶֽם: |
| 11But they refused to listen; and they turned a rebellious shoulder; and they made their ears heavy, not to hear. |
|
יאוַיְמָֽאֲנ֣וּ לְהַקְשִׁ֔יב וַיִּתְּנ֥וּ כָתֵ֖ף סֹרָ֑רֶת וְאָזְנֵיהֶ֖ם הִכְבִּ֥ידוּ מִשְּׁמֽוֹעַ: |
| 12And they made their heart [as hard] as a shamir, [in order] not to listen to the Torah and to the words that the Lord of Hosts sent, through His spirit by the earlier prophets. And there was great anger from the Lord of Hosts. |
|
יבוְלִבָּ֞ם שָׂמ֣וּ שָׁמִ֗יר מִ֠שְּׁמוֹעַ אֶת־הַתּוֹרָ֚ה וְאֶת־הַדְּבָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שָׁלַ֜ח יְהֹוָ֚ה צְבָאוֹת֙ בְּרוּח֔וֹ בְּיַ֖ד הַנְּבִיאִ֣ים הָרִֽאשֹׁנִ֑ים וַיְהִי֙ קֶ֣צֶף גָּד֔וֹל מֵאֵ֖ת יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת: |
| shamir. A worm stronger than flint. They would show it to the stone, which would split. |
|
שמו שמיר.
תולעת חזק מצור מראין אותו על האבן והיא מתבקעת:
|
| 13And it came about; as He called and they did not hearken, so shall they call and I will not hearken, said the Lord of Hosts. |
|
יגוַיְהִ֥י כַֽאֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֖א וְלֹ֣א שָׁמֵ֑עוּ כֵּ֚ן יִקְרְאוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א אֶשְׁמָ֔ע אָמַ֖ר יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת: |
| And it came about; as He called and they did not hearken. the Lord said concerning them in those days: So shall they call and I will not hearken. |
|
ויהי כאשר קרא ולא שמעו.
אמר ה' צבאו' עליהן באותן הימים כן יקראו ולא אשמע:
|
| 14And with a whirlwind I will scatter them among all the nations whom they did not know. And the land shall be waste after them with no one passing through or returning. They made a precious land a desolation. |
|
ידוְאֵ֣סָֽעֲרֵ֗ם עַ֚ל כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־יְדָע֔וּם וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ נָשַׁ֣מָּה אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם מֵֽעֹבֵ֖ר וּמִשָּׁ֑ב וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ אֶֽרֶץ־חֶמְדָּ֖ה לְשַׁמָּֽה: |
| I will scatter them. in exile. And so I did. |
|
ואסערם.
בגלות וכן עשיתי:
|
| they made. with their iniquity. |
|
וישימו.
בעוונם:
|
| desolation. And that brought about the fast (and the mourning), but now [I am jealous for Zion, etc.] |
|
ארץ חמדה לשמה.
והוא גרם להם הצום והמספד אבל עתה קנאתי לציון בשביל ציון אקנא את הכשדים:
