Chapter 48

1Concerning Moab. So said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Woe to Nebo for it is spoiled; Kiriathaim is shamed, it is taken; Misgab is shamed and broken.
Misgab: A place name.
2The praise of Moab is no more; in Heshbon they planned harm to her; Let us go and cut her off from [being] a nation. Also, Madmen, you shall be a waste; the sword shall follow you.
in Heshbon… Madmen: These are place names, and according to their names he mentions their retribution.
you shall be a waste: Heb.
3A voice of a cry [shall be heard] from Horonaim; plunder and great destruction.
4Moab is broken; her youths have let a cry be heard.
her youths: Jonathan [renders]: Her governors, younger than the kings.
5The ascent of Luhith with weeping shall he ascend, yea weeping, for in the descent of Horonaim the adversaries heard a cry of destruction.
the ascent of Luhith: It is a place name, the ascent of a mountain.
6Flee, save your lives, and you shall be like Aro'er in the desert.
like Aro’er: The tower of Aro’er that is made in the desert, and there is no civilization around it except tent dwellers, and a tower standing without an inhabited region appears as ruins. So did Jonathan render it. (See Isaiah 17:2, Commentary Digest.) But Menahem (Machbereth Menahem p. 137) explained כּערוער as the name of a tree of the forest trees.
7For, since you relied on your deeds and on your treasures, you too shall be taken, and Chemosh shall go forth into exile, his priests and his princes together.
8And the spoiler shall come to every city, and no city shall escape, and the valley shall be lost and the plain destroyed, as the Lord has said.
9Give wings to Moab for she shall fly away, and her cities shall become waste, without anyone dwelling in them.
Give wings to Moab: Heb. Give wings to Moab. Every appendage that hangs or protrudes from man or beast is called ציץ. Cf.“And it shall be to you for fringes (לציצית) ” (Num. 15: 39);“And He took me by the locks (בציצית) of my head” (Ezek. 8: 3).
for she shall fly away: Heb. For with flight and haste you shall go forth into exile, and נָצֹא will be of the conjugation of נוֹצָה, a feather. So did Menahem (Machbereth Menahem p. 151) classify it, and so “Yea, they fled away (נָצוּ) and wandered” (Lam. 4:15). Jonathan renders: Remove the crown from Moab. Give others the crown of Moab.
10Cursed be he who performs the Lord's work deceitfully, and cursed be he who withholds his sword from blood.
the Lord’s work: The work of the destruction of Moab, which is the mission of the Omnipresent.
11Moab has been at ease since his youth, and he is settled on his lees, and he has not been poured from one vessel to another vessel, and he has not gone into exile; therefore, its flavor remained therein, and its bouquet did not change.
did not change: Heb.
12Therefore, behold days are coming, says the Lord, and I will send men to pour him out and they shall pour him out, and they shall empty his vessels and smash his jars.
men to pour: Heb. ציעים, those who pour. Cf.“What must be poured out (צֹעֶה) hastened to be opened” (Isa. 51:14). That is the moving of the bowels by pouring.
his jars: Heb. נבליהם [lit. their jars], the Moabites’ flasks.
smash: Heb. ינפצו, they shall break. Cf.“How were they regarded as earthen jars (לְנִבְלֵי) (Lam. 4:2). Also,” Every bottle (נֵבֶל) will be filled with wine" (supra 13.12).
13And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth-el, their reliance.
of Chemosh: in whom they trusted.
of Beth-el: The golden calf.
14How do you say, "We are mighty men, and valiant men for war?"
15Moab has been plundered, and her cities have been laid waste, and the choicest of their young men have gone down to the slaughter, says the King, the Lord of Hosts is His name.
16The destruction of Moab is near to come, and his evil has hastened exceedingly.
17Lament for them, all those around them, and all who know their name, say: How has the staff of strength been broken, the rod of glory?
Lament for them: Heb. נדו, an expression of lamentation. Cf.“and do not lament (תָּנוּד) for him.”
18Come down from glory and sit in thirst, O daughter who dwells in Dibon, for the spoiler of Moab has marched upon you, he has destroyed your fortresses.
19Stand by the road and look, O dweller of Aro'er, ask those who have fled and escaped, tell what has transpired.
ask those who have fled and escaped: Ask those who flee and escape from Moab, what transpired, if anyone escaped from being destroyed
20Moab is ashamed for it is broken; wail and cry, tell in Arnon that Moab has been spoiled.
21And judgment has come to the land of the plain, to Holon and to Jahzah and to Mephaath.
and judgment has come: Retribution has come.
22and to Dibon and to Nebo and to Beth-diblathaim,
23and to Kiriathaim and to Beth-gamul and to Beth-meon,
24and to Kerioth and to Bozrah and to all the cities of the land of Moab, both far and near.
25The horn of Moab has been cut off, and his arm is broken, says the Lord.
26Make him drunk, for he has magnified himself against the Lord, and Moab shall wallow in his vomit and he too shall become a derision.
Make him drunk: Give him to drink [the cup of] weakness until he is drunk.
he too: Just as Israel was derided by him [i.e., Moab].
27For was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves, that whenever you speak of him you shake your head?
you shake your head: Heb. You would shake your head and scoff at their destruction. Another interpretation: For because of your words about him, that you would sing about his destruction, you are going to wander (מתנודד) to go out into exile. And so did Jonathan render: Because you spoke many words about them, therefore you shall wander.
28Leave the cities and dwell in the rock, you inhabitants of Moab, and be like a dove, that nests in the sides of the mouth of a pit.
in the sides of the mouth of a pit: The place where the water passes under the high embankments of the bank of a wadi, and when the wadi is diminished, the pit is found to be empty, and the dove nests in one of the sides of the pit. And when the wadi increases, it inundates the nest and she wanders from there. So I heard, but Jonathan did not render in that manner, [but:] Be like a dove, that leaves the opening of the dovecote and goes down and rests at the bottom of a pit.
29We have heard the pride of Moab, very proud, his loftiness and his pride and his haughtiness, and the arrogance of his heart.
30I know, says the Lord, his wrath, and it is not so, his mighty men have not dealt properly.
his wrath, and it is not so: His hatred of Israel is not in truth or in justice.
his mighty men: Heb. בדיו [lit.] his branches.
have not dealt properly: They did not recompense justly the seed of Abraham, who fought with the kings and saved Lot, their ancestor.
31Therefore, I wail for Moab, and for all of Moab I will cry; for the people of Kir-heres they shall moan.
Kir-heres: A city of the land of Moab.
they shall moan: Moaning like moaning doves.
32From the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, O grape vine of Sibmah; your tendrils have crossed the sea, they reached the sea of Jazer; upon your dried figs and upon your vintage the spoiler has fallen.
From the weeping of Jazar I will weep for you: When this prophecy was said, Jazer had already been destroyed, and that was near Moab.
I will weep for you: I will weep for you, similar to that other weeping [i.e., for Jazer], for you will be destroyed just like [Jazer].
O grape vine of Sibmah: It was a land of vineyards.
your tendrils: Since he compared them to a grape vine, he compared their mighty men to the tendrils of the vine.
crossed the sea: i.e., they went into exile.
your dried figs: Heb. קיצך, an expression of dried figs, but קִצֵ (51:13), an expression of (קץ), an end, has no ‘yud’ and its ‘tzaddi’ has a ‘dagesh.’
33And joy and jubilation shall be taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab, and I will cause the wine to cease from the pits. No one shall tread with shouting; The shouting shall be no shouting.
shall be taken away: Heb. ונאספה, shall be ended that it shall not be seen.
one shall not tread: grapes with a voice of shouting, “Hedad!” with joy as they were wont to do.
The shouting shall be no shouting: The shouting that they will cry will not be the first shouting, but the shouting of fleeing the sword.
34From the cry of Heshbon until Elaleh, they let out their voice as far as Jahaz, from Zoar until Horonaim, O third-born heifer, for also the waters of Nimrim shall become wastelands.
O third born heifer: Heb. עגלתשלישיה, mighty province.
35And I will cause to cease from Moab, says the Lord, one who offers up [sacrifices] on the high places and who burns incense to his gods.
36Therefore, my heart shall stir for Moab like flutes, and my heart shall stir for the men of Kir-heres like flutes; because they dealt haughtily,
because they dealt haughtily: יתרתעשה. Because they dealt haughtily, they perished.
37For every head is bald and every beard clipped; on all hands are scratches, and on the loins sackcloth.
scratches: Heb.
38On all the roofs of Moab and in her broad places, there is lamentation everywhere, for I have broken Moab like a vessel that has no use, says the Lord.
39Wail, "How was she dismayed? How did Moab turn its back?" They were shamed, and Moab became a derision and a dismay to all its surroundings.
Wail, “How was she dismayed?”: Wail about her and say, “How was she dismayed?”
40For so said the Lord: Behold, like an eagle he shall soar and spread out his wings upon Moab.
like an eagle he shall soar: [i. e.,] the enemy [shall swoop] upon Moab.
shall soar: Heb. ידאה, shall fly.
41Kerioth has been taken, and the fortresses have been seized; and the heart of the mighty men of Moab shall be on that day like the heart of a woman travailing.
Kerioth: Heb. הקריות, the name of the city.
42And Moab shall be destroyed from [being] a people, for they magnified themselves against the Lord.
43Fright and a pit and a snare shall be upon you, O dweller of Moab, says the Lord.
Fright and a pit: These are two hard things, one next to the other, for fright causes him to flee, and the pit is ready to fall into. פַּחַת is (fosse in French) a pit.
44Whoever flees the fright shall fall into the pit, and whoever ascends from the pit shall be caught in the snare, for I will bring to her, to Moab the year of their visitation, says the Lord.
45In the shadow of Heshbon, those who were fleeing stood for [lack of strength], for a fire emanated from Heshbon and a flame from the city of Sihon, and it consumed the corner of Moab and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
In the shadow of Heshbon: which is high and has a shadow.
stood: Those who were fleeing [stood] to rest in the shadow since they had no more strength to flee.
from the city of Sihon: Heb. מבין, from the city of Sihon. Cf.“the city of (בֶּן) Reuben” in Joshua (15:6).
and the crown of the head: Heb. וקדקד, (estrit in Provencal or estrif in O.F. [to fight]) and Menahem (Machbereth Menahem p. 158) classified it as an expression of a spring (מָקוֹר) and Jonathan rendered: יַקִּירֵי the esteemed ones, an expression of יְקָר, esteem.
the tumultuous ones: Heb. בני שאון, those who would raise their voice with boasting.
46Woe to you, Moab, the people of Chemosh is lost, for your sons have been taken into captivity and your daughters into captivity.
47And I will return the captivity of Moab at the end of days, says the Lord. Until here is the judgment of Moab.
