1And Samson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and came to her. |

אוַיֵּ֥לֶךְ שִׁמְשׁ֖וֹן עַזָּ֑תָה וַיַּרְא־שָׁם֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה זוֹנָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֖א אֵלֶֽיהָ: |
2To the Gazites (it was told) saying, "Samson has come here," and they compassed and lied in wait for him all night by the gate of the city. And they were quiet the whole night, saying, "Until the morning light and we will kill him." |

בלַֽעַזָּתִ֣ים | לֵאמֹ֗ר בָּ֚א שִׁמְשׁוֹן֙ הֵ֔נָּה וַיָּסֹ֛בּוּ וַיֶּאֶרְבוּ־ל֥וֹ כָל־הַלַּ֖יְלָה בְּשַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֑יר וַיִּתְחָרְשׁ֚וּ כָל־הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר עַד־א֥וֹר הַבֹּ֖קֶר וַהֲרַגְנֻֽהוּ: |
To the Gazites, saying (Lit.). To the people of Gaza it was told. |

לאנשי עזה נאמר:

And they were quiet. They conducted themselves quietly. |

נהגו עצמן בשתיקה:

3And Samson lay until midnight, and arose at midnight, and laid hold of the doors of the gate of the city, and of the two posts, and he plucked them up together with the bolt and put them upon his shoulders, and he brought them up to the top of the mountain that is facing Hebron. |

גוַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב שִׁמְשׁוֹן֘ עַד־חֲצִ֣י הַלַּיְלָה֒ וַיָּ֣קָם | בַּחֲצִ֣י הַלַּ֗יְלָה וַיֶּאֱחֹ֞ז בְּדַלְת֚וֹת שַֽׁעַר־הָעִיר֙ וּבִשְׁתֵּ֣י הַמְּזוּז֔וֹת וַיִּסָּעֵם֙ עִֽם־הַבְּרִ֔יחַ וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־כְּתֵפָ֑יו וַֽיַּעֲלֵם֙ אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י חֶבְרֽוֹן: |
וַיִּסָּעֵם. And he uprooted them from their place. |

ויסעם.
ויעקרם ממקומם:

4And it was afterwards, that he loved a woman by the brook of Sorek, and her name was Delilah. |
|
דוַֽיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־כֵ֔ן וַיֶּאֱהַ֥ב אִשָּׁ֖ה בְּנַ֣חַל שׂוֹרֵ֑ק וּשְׁמָ֖הּ דְּלִילָֽה: |
5And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, "Persuade him, and see wherein his strength is so great, and with what we can prevail against him that we may tie him up to torture him: and each of us will give you eleven hundred pieces of silver." |

הוַיַּעֲל֨וּ אֵלֶ֜יהָ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיֹּ֨אמְרוּ לָ֜הּ פַּתִּ֣י אוֹת֗וֹ וּרְאִי֙ בַּמֶּה֙ כֹּח֣וֹ גָד֔וֹל וּבַמֶּה֙ נ֣וּכַל ל֔וֹ וַאֲסַרְנֻ֖הוּ לְעַנּוֹת֑וֹ וַאֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ נִתַּן־לָ֔ךְ אִ֕ישׁ אֶ֥לֶף וּמֵאָ֖ה כָּֽסֶף: |
6And Delilah said to Samson, "Tell me now, wherein is your strength so great, and with what you may be tied up to torture you." |

ווַתֹּ֚אמֶר דְּלִילָה֙ אֶל־שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א לִ֔י בַּמֶּ֖ה כֹּחֲךָ֣ גָד֑וֹל וּבַמֶּ֥ה תֵאָסֵ֖ר לְעַנּוֹתֶֽךָ: |
7And Samson said to her, "If I will be bound with seven moist bowstrings that did not dry, then I shall become weak, and be as any man." |

זוַיֹּ֚אמֶר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן אִם־יַאַסְרֻ֗נִי בְּשִׁבְעָ֛ה יְתָרִ֥ים לַחִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־חֹרָ֖בוּ וְחָלִ֥יתִי וְהָיִ֖יתִי כְּאַחַ֥ד הָאָדָֽם: |

8And the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven moist bowstrings that did not dry, and she bound him with them. |
|
חוַיַּעֲלוּ־לָ֞הּ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים שִׁבְעָ֛ה יְתָרִ֥ים לַחִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־חֹרָ֑בוּ וַתַּאַסְרֵ֖הוּ בָּהֶֽם: |
9Now the ambushers stayed in the room, and she said to him, "The Philistines (have come) upon you Samson!" And he tore the bowstrings as a string of tow is torn when it is smelled by fire, and his strength was not known. |
|
טוְהָאֹרֵ֗ב ישֵׁ֥ב לָהּ֙ בַּחֶ֔דֶר וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו פְּלִשְׁתִּ֥ים עָלֶ֖יךָ שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן וַיְנַתֵּק֙ אֶת־הַיְתָרִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יִנָּתֵ֚ק פְּתִֽיל־הַנְּעֹ֙רֶת֙ בַּהֲרִיח֣וֹ אֵ֔שׁ וְלֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע כֹּחֽוֹ: |
and his strength was not known. He did not have to exert himself to tear them. |
|
ולא נודע כחו.
לא הוצרך להתחזק בנתקו אותם:

10And Delilah said to Samson, "Behold you have mocked me, and told me lies. Immediately now tell me, with what you may be tied up." |
|
יוַתֹּ֚אמֶר דְּלִילָה֙ אֶל־שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן הִנֵּה֙ הֵתַ֣לְתָּ בִּ֔י וַתְּדַבֵּ֥ר אֵלַ֖י כְּזָבִ֑ים עַתָּה֙ הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א לִ֔י בַּמֶּ֖ה תֵּאָסֵֽר: |
11And he said to her, "If I will be tied up with new ropes with which no work has been done, then I shall become weak, and be as any man." |

יאוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֔יהָ אִם־אָס֚וֹר יַאַסְר֙וּנִי֙ בַּעֲבֹתִ֣ים חֲדָשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־נַעֲשָֹ֥ה בָהֶ֖ם מְלָאכָ֑ה וְחָלִ֥יתִי וְהָיִ֖יתִי כְּאַחַ֥ד הָאָדָֽם: |

12And Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them, and said to him, "The Philistines (have come) upon you Samson!" and the ambushers were staying in the room. And he tore them from his arms like a thread. |

יבוַתִּקַּ֣ח דְּלִילָה֩ עֲבֹתִ֨ים חֲדָשִׁ֜ים וַתַּאַסְרֵ֣הוּ בָהֶ֗ם וַתֹּ֚אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֚ים עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ שִׁמְשׁ֔וֹן וְהָאֹרֵ֖ב ישֵׁ֣ב בֶּחָ֑דֶר וַֽיְנַתְּקֵ֛ם מֵעַ֥ל זְרֹעֹתָ֖יו כַּחֽוּט: |
13And Delilah said to Samson, "Until now you have mocked me, and told me lies, tell me with what you may be tied up." And he said to her, "If you weave the seven locks of my head to the roller." |

מחלפות.

to the roller. The wood upon which the weaver spreads out the warp. The name of this wood is ensouple in O.F. The roller (is called) ourdissuire in O.F. |
|
עם המסכת.

14And she fastened (it) with the peg, and said to him, "The Philistines (have come) upon you Samson." And he awoke from his sleep, and plucked away the peg of the web and the roller. |
|
ידוַתִּתְקַע֙ בַּיָּתֵ֔ד וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו פְּלִשְׁתִּ֥ים עָלֶ֖יךָ שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן וַיִיקַץ֙ מִשְּׁנָת֔וֹ וַיִּסַּ֛ע אֶת־הַיְתַ֥ד הָאֶ֖רֶג וְאֶת־הַמַּסָּֽכֶת: |
15And she said to him, "How can you say 'I love you,' while your heart is not with me? These three times you have mocked me, and you have not told me wherein is your strength so great." |

טווַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו אֵ֚יךְ תֹּאמַ֣ר אֲהַבְתִּ֔יךְ וְלִבְּךָ֖ אֵ֣ין אִתִּ֑י זֶ֣ה שָׁל֚שׁ פְּעָמִים֙ הֵתַ֣לְתָּ בִּ֔י וְלֹא־הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֔י בַּמֶּ֖ה כֹּחֲךָ֥ גָדֽוֹל: |
16And it was, as she nagged him with her words every day, and pressed him, that his soul was vexed to death. |

טזוַ֠יְהִי כִּֽי־הֵצִ֨יקָה לּ֧וֹ בִדְבָרֶ֛יהָ כָּל־הַיָּמִ֖ים וַתְּאַֽלְצֵ֑הוּ וַתִּקְצַ֥ר נַפְשׁ֖וֹ לָמֽוּת: |
וַתְּאַלְצֵהוּ. And she pressed him. |
|
ותאלצהו.
דחקתו, ואין לו דמיון:
|
17And he told her all his heart, and said to her, "A razor has not come upon my head, for I am a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I will be shaven, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak and be like any man." |
|
יזוַיַּגֶּד־לָ֣הּ אֶת־כָּל־לִבּ֗וֹ וַיֹּ֚אמֶר לָהּ֙ מוֹרָה֙ לֹֽא־עָלָ֣ה עַל־רֹאשִׁ֔י כִּֽי־נְזִ֧יר אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֲנִ֖י מִבֶּ֣טֶן אִמִּ֑י אִם־גֻּלַּ֙חְתִּי֙ וְסָ֣ר מִמֶּ֣נִּי כֹחִ֔י וְחָלִ֥יתִי וְהָיִ֖יתִי כְּכָל־הָאָדָֽם: |
18And Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, and she sent and called to the lords of the Philistines saying, "Come up this time, for he has told me all his heart." And the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hands. |

יחוַתֵּ֣רֶא דְּלִילָ֗ה כִּֽי־הִגִּ֣יד לָהּ֘ אֶת־כָּל־לִבּוֹ֒ וַתִּשְׁלַ֡ח וַתִּקְרָא֩ לְסַרְנֵ֨י פְלִשְׁתִּ֚ים לֵאמֹר֙ עֲל֣וּ הַפַּ֔עַם כִּֽי־הִגִּ֥יד לִ֖י (כתיב לִ֖ה) אֶת־כָּל־לִבּ֑וֹ וְעָל֚וּ אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיַּעֲל֥וּ הַכֶּ֖סֶף בְּיָדָֽם: |
And Delilah saw that he had told her. The words of truth are discernable. |
|
ותרא דלילה כי הגיד לה.
ניכרין דברי אמת:
|
19And she put him to sleep upon her knees, and she called to the man, and she shaved off the seven locks of his head. And she began to afflict him, and his strength left him. |
|
יטוַתְּיַשְּׁנֵ֙הוּ֙ עַל־בִּרְכֶּ֔יהָ וַתִּקְרָ֣א לָאִ֔ישׁ וַתְּגַלַּ֕ח אֶת־שֶׁ֖בַע מַחְלְפ֣וֹת רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַתָּ֙חֶל֙ לְעַנּוֹת֔וֹ וַיָּ֥סַר כֹּח֖וֹ מֵעָלָֽיו: |
and she called to the man. To the messenger of the lords. |
|
ותקרא לאיש.
לשלוחן של סרנים:
|
20And she said, "The Philistines (have come) upon you Samson!" And he awoke from his sleep and said, "I will go out as at other times, and I will shake myself," but he did not know that the Lord had departed from him. |
|
כוַתֹּ֕אמֶר פְּלִשְׁתִּ֥ים עָלֶ֖יךָ שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן וַיִּקַ֣ץ מִשְּׁנָת֗וֹ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֵצֵ֞א כְּפַ֚עַם בְּפַ֙עַם֙ וְאִנָּעֵ֔ר וְהוּא֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה סָ֥ר מֵעָלָֽיו: |
21And the Philistines seized him, and gouged out his eyes. And they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with copper chains, and he did grind in the prison house. |
|
כאוַיֹּאחֲז֣וּהוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַֽיְנַקְּר֖וּ אֶת־עֵינָ֑יו וַיּוֹרִ֨ידוּ אוֹת֜וֹ עַזָּ֗תָה וַיַּאַסְר֙וּהוּ֙ בַּֽנְחֻשְׁתַּ֔יִם וַיְהִ֥י טוֹחֵ֖ן בְּבֵ֥ית הָאֲסוּרִֽים (כתיב הָאֲסיּרִֽים) : |
And they brought him down to Gaza. (This was) the location of his first corruption (above v. 1). |
|
ויורידו אותו עזתה.
מקום תחלת קלקולו:
|
and he did grind. With a mill. This was hard labor. However, our Sages explained that which they explained. |
|
ויהי טוחן.
בריחים, מלאכה כבדה ורבותינו (סוטה י א) פירשו מה שפירשו:
|
22And the hair of his head began to grow after he was shaven. |
|
כבוַיָּ֧חֶל שְׂעַר־רֹאשׁ֛וֹ לְצַמֵּ֖חַ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר גֻּלָּֽח: |
23And the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to rejoice. And they said, "Our god has delivered our enemy Samson into our hands." |
|
כגוְסַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים נֶֽאֶסְפוּ֙ לִזְבֹּ֧חַ זֶֽבַח־גָּד֛וֹל לְדָג֥וֹן אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם וּלְשִׂמְחָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ נָתַ֚ן אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ בְּיָדֵ֔נוּ אֶ֖ת שִׁמְשׁ֥וֹן אוֹיְבֵֽינוּ: |
24And the people saw him and praised their god, because they said, "Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy and the destroyer of our land, and who has slain many of us." |

כדוַיִּרְא֚וּ אֹתוֹ֙ הָעָ֔ם וַֽיְהַלְל֖וּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אָמְר֗וּ נָתַ֨ן אֱלֹהֵ֚ינוּ בְיָדֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־א֣וֹיְבֵ֔נוּ וְאֵת֙ מַחֲרִ֣יב אַרְצֵ֔נוּ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר הִרְבָּ֖ה אֶת־חֲלָלֵֽינוּ: |
25And it was when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, and he will make sport for us." And they called for Samson out of the prison-house, and he made sport before them, and they stood him between the pillars. |

כהוַֽיְהִי֙ כְּי כְּט֣וֹב (כתיב ט֣וֹב) לִבָּ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ קִרְא֥וּ לְשִׁמְשׁ֖וֹן וִישַֹֽחֶק־לָ֑נוּ וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ לְשִׁמְשׁ֜וֹן מִבֵּ֣ית הָאֲסוּרִ֗ים (כתיב הָאֲסיּרִ֗ים) וַיְצַחֵק֙ לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּעֲמִ֥ידוּ אוֹת֖וֹ בֵּ֥ין הָעַמּוּדִֽים: |
between the pillars. Upon which the building was supported. |

בין העמודים.
אשר הבית נכון עליהם:

26And Samson said to the lad that held him by his hand, "Allow me, and let me feel the pillars whereupon the house rests, that I may lean upon them." |
|
כווַיֹּ֨אמֶר שִׁמְשׁ֜וֹן אֶל־הַנַּ֨עַר הַמַּחֲזִ֣יק בְּיָדוֹ֘ הַנִּ֣יחָה אוֹתִי֒ וַהֲמִשֵׁ֙נִי֙ (כתיב וַהֲימִשֵׁ֙נִי֙) אֶת־הָֽעַמֻּדִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַבַּ֖יִת נָכ֣וֹן עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶשָּׁעֵ֖ן עֲלֵיהֶֽם: |
and let me feel. Heb. וַהֲמִישֵנִי, Palpare (פלפאר) in O.F. as in, (Gen. 27: 12) “Perhaps my father will feel me” (יְמֻשֵּׁנִי). |

והמישני.

27Now the house was full of men and women, and all the lords of the Philistines were there. And upon the roof (there were) about three thousand men and women, the spectators of Samson's sport. |
|
כזוְהַבַּ֗יִת מָלֵ֚א הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וְהַנָּשִׁ֔ים וְשָׁ֕מָּה כֹּ֖ל סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וְעַל־הַגָּ֗ג כִּשְׁל֚שֶׁת אֲלָפִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשָּׁ֔ה הָרֹאִ֖ים בִּשְׂח֥וֹק שִׁמְשֽׁוֹן: |
28And Samson called to the Lord and said, "O Lord God, remember me and strengthen me now, only this once O God, that I may be avenged the vengeance for one of my two eyes from the Philistines." |

כחוַיִּקְרָ֥א שִׁמְשׁ֛וֹן אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִֹ֡ה זָכְרֵ֣נִי נָא֩ וְחַזְּקֵ֨נִי נָ֜א אַ֣ךְ הַפַּ֚עַם הַזֶּה֙ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאִנָּקְמָ֧ה נְקַם־אַחַ֛ת מִשְּׁתֵ֥י עֵינַ֖י מִפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים: |
remember me. Remember the twenty years that I judged Israel and did not tell one of them “Move this stick for me from one place to another.” |
|
זכרני נא.
זכור עשרים שנה ששפטתי את ישראל, ולא אמרתי לאחד מהם העבר לי מקל זה ממקום למקום:
|
the vengeance for one of my two eyes. And the reward for the second eye reserve for me for the world to come, but here pay me the reward for one of them. |
|
נקם אחת משתי עיני.
ושכר עין השנית הנח לי לעולם הבא, וכאן פרע לי שכר אחת מהן:
|
29And Samson grasped the two pillars of the center, upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, (the) one with his right hand and the other with his left. |
|
כטוַיִּלְפֹּ֨ת שִׁמְשׁ֜וֹן אֶת־שְׁנֵ֣י | עַמּוּדֵ֣י הַתָּ֗וֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֚ר הַבַּ֙יִת֙ נָכ֣וֹן עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּסָּמֵ֖ךְ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם אֶחָ֥ד בִּימִינ֖וֹ וְאֶחָ֥ד בִּשְׂמֹאלֽוֹ: |
וַיִּלְפֹּת. And he grasped. Embrasser (אינברצא) in O.F. as in, (Ruth 3: 8) “And the man trembled and was grasped” (וַיִּלָּפֵת), he was grasped by the arms of the woman. |
|
וילפת.
ויאחז, אינברצ"א בלע"ז, כמו (רות ג ח): ויחרד האיש וילפת, נאחז בזרועות האשה:

30And Samson said, "Let my soul die with the Philistines," and he bent with (his) might, and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. And the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his lifetime. |
|
לוַיֹּ֣אמֶר שִׁמְשׁ֗וֹן תָּמ֣וֹת נַפְשִׁי֘ עִם־פְּלִשְׁתִּים֒ וַיֵּ֣ט בְּכֹ֔חַ וַיִּפֹּ֚ל הַבַּ֙יִת֙ עַל־הַסְּרָנִ֔ים וְעַל־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁר־בּ֑וֹ וַיִּהְי֚וּ הַמֵּתִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵמִ֣ית בְּמוֹת֔וֹ רַבִּ֕ים מֵאֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵמִ֖ית בְּחַיָּֽיו: |
31And his brothers and all his father's household came down, and carried him, and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying place of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years. |

לאוַיֵּרְד֨וּ אֶחָ֜יו וְכָל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִיהוּ֘ וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ אֹתוֹ֒ וַֽיַּעֲל֣וּ | וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ אוֹת֗וֹ בֵּ֚ין צָרְעָה֙ וּבֵ֣ין אֶשְׁתָּא֔וֹל בְּקֶ֖בֶר מָנ֣וֹחַ אָבִ֑יו וְה֛וּא שָׁפַ֥ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה: |
