| 1And the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Israel; |

אוַֽיִּגְּשׁ֗וּ רָאשֵׁי֙ אֲב֣וֹת הַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶל־אֶלְעָזָר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְאֶל־יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־נ֑וּן וְאֶל־רָאשֵׁ֛י אֲב֥וֹת הַמַּטּ֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| 2And they spoke to them in Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The Lord commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, and the open land around them for our cattle." |
|
בוַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם בְּשִׁלֹ֗ה בְּאֶ֚רֶץ כְּנַ֙עַן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יְהֹוָה֙ צִוָּ֣ה בְיַד־מֹשֶׁ֔ה לָֽתֶת־לָ֥נוּ עָרִ֖ים לָשָׁ֑בֶת וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֖ן לִבְהֶמְתֵּֽנוּ: |
| 3And the children of Israel gave to the Levites from their inheritance, according to the commandment of the Lord, these cities and the open land around them. |
|
גוַיִּתְּנ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל לַֽלְוִיִּ֛ם מִנַּֽחֲלָתָ֖ם אֶל־פִּ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה אֶת־הֶֽעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן: |
| 4And the lot went out for the families of the Kohathites; and the children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had by lot, from the tribe of Judah, and from the tribe of Simeon, and from the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities. |
|
דוַיֵּצֵ֥א הַגּוֹרָ֖ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַקְּהָתִ֑י וַיְהִ֡י לִבְנֵי֩ אַֽהֲרֹ֨ן הַכֹּהֵ֜ן מִן־הַֽלְוִיִּ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֣ה יְ֠הוּדָ֠ה וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה הַשִּׁמְעֹנִ֜י וּמִמַּטֵּ֚ה בִנְיָמִן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁל֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה: |
| 5And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot ten cities from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Dan, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh. |
|
הוְלִבְנֵ֨י קְהָ֜ת הַֽנּוֹתָרִ֗ים מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת מַטֵּֽה־אֶ֠פְרַ֠יִם וּמִמַּטֵּה־דָ֞ן וּמֵֽחֲצִ֨י מַטֵּ֧ה מְנַשֶּׁ֛ה בַּגּוֹרָ֖ל עָרִ֥ים עָֽשֶׂר: |
| And the rest of the children of Kohath. They are the children of Moses, and the children of Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel. |
|
וְלִבְנֵי קְהָת הַנּוֹתָרִים.
הֵם בְּנֵי משֶׁה וּבְנֵי יִצְהָר וְחֶבְרוֹן וְעֻזִּיאֵל.

| from the families of the tribe of Ephraim. These cities fell to them from the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, for they received cities in the inheritance of each tribe, as it is stated: “From the many you shall take many, and from the few you shall take few; each tribe according to its inheritance which they inherit, shall give of its cities to the Levites.” |
|
מִמִּשְׁפַּחַת מַטֵּה אֶפְרַיִם.
מִנַּחֲלַת שֵׁבֶט בְּנֵי אֶפְרַיִם נָפְלוּ לָהֶם אֵלֶּה הֶעָרִים, שֶׁבְּכָל שֵׁבֶט וְשֵׁבֶט נָטְלוּ, כְּמָה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר לה ח): מֵאֵת הָרַב תַּרְבּוּ וּמֵאֵת הַמְּעַט תַּמְעִיטוּ אִישׁ כְּפִי נַחֲלָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר יִנְחָלוּ יִתֵּן מֵעָרָיו לַלְוִיִּם.

| 6And the children of Gershon had by lot from the families of the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribe of Asher, and from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. |
|
ווְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵֽרְשׁ֗וֹן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת מַטֵּֽה־יִשָּׂשכָ֣ר וּמִמַּטֵּֽה־אָ֠שֵׁ֠ר וּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י וּ֠מֵֽחֲצִ֠י מַטֵּ֨ה מְנַשֶּׁ֚ה בַבָּשָׁן֙ בַּגּוֹרָ֔ל עָרִ֖ים שְׁל֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵֽה: |
| 7For the children of Merari according to their families, there were twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben and from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun. |
|
זלִבְנֵ֨י מְרָרִ֜י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֗ם מִמַּטֵּ֨ה רְאוּבֵ֚ן וּמִמַּטֵּה־גָד֙ וּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה: |
| 8And the children of Israel gave to the Levites by lot these cities with the open land around them, as the Lord had commanded through Moses. |
|
חוַיִּתְּנ֚וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם אֶת־הֶֽעָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה וְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהֹוָ֛ה בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֖ה בַּגּוֹרָֽל: |
| 9And they gave from the tribe of the children of Judah, and from the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities that will be mentioned by name. |
|
טוַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ מִמַּטֵּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וּמִמַּטֵּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֑וֹן אֵ֚ת הֶֽעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרָ֥א אֶתְהֶ֖ן בְּשֵֽׁם: |
| these cities that will be mentioned by name. Since above he did not mention the names of the cities which they gave them, and below he enumerates them, he, therefore, states: These cities that will be mentioned by name. |
|
אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָא אֶתְהֶן בְּשֵׁם.
לְפִי שֶׁלֹּא הִזְכִּיר לְמַעְלָה אֶת שְׁמוֹת הֶעָרִים שֶׁנִּתְּנוּ לָהֶם, וּלְמַטָּה הוּא מְפָרֵשׁ אֶת שְׁמוֹתָם, לְכָךְ אָמַר: אֲשֶׁר יִקְרָא אֶתְהֶן בְּשֵׁם.

| 10And it was for the children of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites, of the children of Levi, for theirs was the first lot. |
|
יוַֽיְהִי֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֔ן מִמִּשְׁפְּח֥וֹת הַקְּהָתִ֖י מִבְּנֵ֣י לֵוִ֑י כִּ֥י לָהֶ֛ם הָיָ֥ה הַגּוֹרָ֖ל רִֽאשֹׁנָֽה (כתיב רִֽאישֹׁנָֽה) : |
| 11And they gave them the city of Arba father of the 'Anok (giants) which is Hebron in the hill- country of Judah, and the open land around it. |
|
יאוַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־קִרְיַת֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע אֲבִ֧י הָֽעֲנ֛וֹק הִ֥יא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּהַ֣ר יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ סְבִיבֹתֶֽיהָ: |
| 12And the fields of the city, and its villages, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh in his possession. |
|
יבוְאֶת־שְׂדֵ֥ה הָעִ֖יר וְאֶת־חֲצֵרֶ֑יהָ נָֽתְנ֛וּ לְכָלֵ֥ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּ֖ה בַּֽאֲחֻזָּתֽוֹ: |
| 13And to the children of Aaron the priest they gave the city of refuge for the slayer, Hebron and the open land around it, and Libnah and the open land around it, |
|
יגוְלִבְנֵ֣י | אַֽהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֗ן נָֽתְנוּ֙ אֶת־עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־חֶבְר֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑יהָ וְאֶת־לִבְנָ֖ה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁיהָ: |
| 14And Jattir with the open land around it, and Eshtemoa with the open land around it, |
|
ידוְאֶת־יַתִּר֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶֽת־אֶשְׁתְּמ֖וֹעַ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 15And Holon with the open land around it, and Debir with the open land around it, |
|
טווְאֶת־חֹלֹן֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־דְּבִ֖ר וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 16And 'Ain with the open land around it, and Juttah with the open land around it, and Beth-shemesh with the open land around it, nine cities from these two tribes. |
|
טזוְאֶת־עַ֣יִן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֗הָ וְאֶת־יֻטָּה֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־בֵּ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֣ים תֵּ֔שַׁע מֵאֵ֕ת שְׁנֵ֥י הַשְּׁבָטִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה: |
| 17And from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon and the open land around it, Geba with the open land around it, |
|
יזוּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֔ן אֶת־גִּבְע֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־גֶּ֖בַע וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 18'Anathoth with the open land around it, and 'Almon with the open land around it, four cities. |
|
יחאֶת־עֲנָתוֹת֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־עַלְמ֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע: |
| And 'Almon. and in Chron.: “and 'Alemeth.” That is Bahurim which Jonathan renders: עַלְמוֹת |
|
וְאֶת עַלְמוֹן.
וּבְדִבְרֵי הַיָּמִים (דברי הימים א ו מה): וְאֶת עָלֶמֶת, הִיא בַּחוּרִים, שֶׁיּוֹנָתָן (שמואל ב ג טז) מְתַרְגֵּם אוֹתָהּ: עֲלָמוֹת.

| 19All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities and the open land around them. |
|
יטכָּל־עָרֵ֥י בְנֵי־אַֽהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֑ים שְׁלֽשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עָרִ֖ים וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן: |
| 20And to the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites, who remained of the children of Kohath, the cities of their lot were from the tribe of Ephraim. |
|
כוּלְמִשְׁפְּח֚וֹת בְּנֵֽי־קְהָת֙ הַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם הַנּֽוֹתָרִ֖ים מִבְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֑ת וַֽיְהִי֙ עָרֵ֣י גֽוֹרָלָ֔ם מִמַּטֵּ֖ה אֶפְרָֽיִם: |
| 21And they gave them the city of refuge for the slayer, Shechem with the open land around it in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Gezer with the open land around it, |
|
כאוַיִּתְּנ֨וּ לָהֶ֜ם אֶת־עִ֨יר מִקְלַ֧ט הָֽרֹצֵ֛חַ אֶת־שְׁכֶ֥ם וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֖הָ בְּהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וְאֶת־גֶּ֖זֶר וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 22And Kibzaim with the open land around it, and Beth-horon with the open land around it, four cities. |
|
כבוְאֶת־קִבְצַ֙יִם֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־בֵּ֥ית חֹר֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע: |
| 23And from the tribe of Dan, Elteke and the open land around it, Gibbethon with the open land around it, |
|
כגוּמִמַּ֨טֵּה־דָ֔ן אֶֽת־אֶלְתְּקֵ֖א וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶֽת־גִּבְּת֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 24Ajalon and the open land around, Gath-rimmon with the open land around it, four cities. |
|
כדאֶת־אַיָּלוֹן֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־גַּת־רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע: |
| 25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach and the open land around it, and Gath-rimmon and the open land around it, two cities. |
|
כהוּמִֽמַּֽחֲצִית֙ מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה אֶת־תַּעְנַךְ֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־גַּת־רִמּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם: |
| 26All the cities and the open land around them for the families of Kohath that remained, were ten. |
|
כוכָּל־עָרִ֥ים עֶ֖שֶׂר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶ֑ן לְמִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת בְּנֵֽי־קְהָ֖ת הַנּֽוֹתָרִֽים: |
| 27And to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, (was given) from the half-tribe of Manasseh, the city of refuge for the slayer, Golan in Bashan and the open land around it, and Beeshterah with the open land around it, two cities. |
|
כזוְלִבְנֵ֣י גֵֽרְשׁוֹן֘ מִמִּשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת הַֽלְוִיִּם֒ מֵֽחֲצִ֞י מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה אֶת־עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־גּוֹלָ֚ן (כתיב גֹּלָ֚ון) בַּבָּשָׁן֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶֽת־בְּעֶשְׁתְּרָ֖ה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שְׁתָּֽיִם: |
| 28And from the tribe of Issachar, Kishion and the open land around it, and Dobrath and the open land around it. |
|
כחוּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר אֶת־קִשְׁי֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־דָּֽבְרַ֖ת וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 29Jarmuth and the open land around it, 'Ein-gannim and the open land around it, four cities. |
|
כטאֶת־יַרְמוּת֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־עֵ֥ין גַּנִּ֖ים וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבָּֽע: |
| 30And from the tribe of Asher, Mishal and the open land around it, 'Abdon and the open land around it. |
|
לוּמִמַּטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֔ר אֶת־מִשְׁאָ֖ל וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־עַבְדּ֖וֹן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 31Helkath and the open land around it, and Rehob with the open land around it, four cities. |
|
לאאֶת־חֶלְקָת֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־רְחֹ֖ב וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע: |
| 32And from the tribe of Naphtali, the city of refuge of the slayer, Kedesh in Galilee and the open land around it, and Hamoth-dor with the open land around it, and Kartan with the open land around it, three cities. |
|
לבוּמִמַּטֵּ֨ה נַפְתָּלִ֜י אֶת־עִ֣יר | מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֗חַ אֶת־קֶ֨דֶשׁ בַּגָּלִ֚יל וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֙הָ֙ וְאֶת־חַמֹּ֥ת דֹּאר֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ וְאֶת־קַרְתָּ֖ן וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים שָׁלֽשׁ: |
| 33All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with the open land around them. |
|
לגכָּל־עָרֵ֥י הַגֵּֽרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם שְׁלֽשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה עִ֖יר וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן: |
| 34And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, (was given) from the tribe of Zebulun Jokneam and the open land around it, Kartah with the open land around it, |
|
לדוּלְמִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־מְרָרִי֘ הַֽלְוִיִּ֣ם הַנּֽוֹתָרִים֒ מֵאֵת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן אֶֽת־יָקְנְעָ֖ם וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ אֶת־קַרְתָּ֖ה וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 35Dimnah with the open land around it, Nahalal and the open land around it; four cities. |
|
להאֶת־דִּמְנָה֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶֽת־נַֽהֲלָ֖ל וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ עָרִ֖ים אַרְבָּֽע: |
| 36And from the tribe of Gad, the city of refuge for the slayer, Ramoth in Gilead with the open land around it, and Mahanaim with the open land around it. |
|
לווּמִמַּטֵּה־גָ֗ד אֶת־עִיר֙ מִקְלַ֣ט הָֽרֹצֵ֔חַ אֶת־רָמֹ֥ת בַּגִּלְעָ֖ד וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ וְאֶֽת־מַֽחֲנַ֖יִם וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶֽׁהָ: |
| 37Heshbon with the open land around it, Jazer with the open land around it; four cities in all. |
|
לזאֶת־חֶשְׁבּוֹן֙ וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֔הָ אֶת־יַעְזֵ֖ר וְאֶת־מִגְרָשֶׁ֑הָ כָּל־עָרִ֖ים אַרְבַּֽע: |
| 38All these cities were for the children of Merari according to their families, those who remained of the families of the Levites, and their lot was twelve cities. |
|
לחכָּל־הֶ֨עָרִ֜ים לִבְנֵ֚י מְרָרִי֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם הַנּֽוֹתָרִ֖ים מִמִּשְׁפְּח֣וֹת הַֽלְוִיִּ֑ם וַֽיְהִי֙ גּֽוֹרָלָ֔ם עָרִ֖ים שְׁתֵּ֥ים עֶשְׂרֵֽה: |
| 39All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Israel, were forty-eight cities with the open land around them. |
|
לטכֹּ֚ל עָרֵ֣י הַֽלְוִיִּ֔ם בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲחֻזַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עָרִ֛ים אַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶֽן: |
| 40These cities shall be (to the Levites) each city and its open land around; thus shall it be for all these cities. |
|
מתִּֽהְיֶ֙ינָה֙ הֶֽעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה עִ֣יר עִ֔יר וּמִגְרָשֶׁ֖יהָ סְבִֽיבֹתֶ֑יהָ כֵּ֖ן לְכָל־הֶֽעָרִ֥ים הָאֵֽלֶּה: |
| and its open land around. two thousand ells on each side. |
|
אֶת מִגְרָשֶׁיהָ סְבִיבוֹתֶיהָ.
אַלְפַּיִם אַמָּה לְכָל רוּחַ.
|
| 41And the Lord gave to Israel the entire land that He swore to give to their fathers, and they inherited it and dwelled in it. |
|
מאוַיִּתֵּ֚ן יְהֹוָה֙ לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לָתֵ֣ת לַֽאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וַיִּֽרָשׁ֖וּהָ וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ בָֽהּ: |
| 42And the Lord gave them rest from about, according to all that He swore to their fathers; and no man of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand. |
|
מבוַיָּ֨נַח יְהֹוָ֚ה לָהֶם֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֖ע לַֽאֲבוֹתָ֑ם וְלֹא־עָ֨מַד אִ֚ישׁ בִּפְנֵיהֶם֙ מִכָּל־אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֹ֣יְבֵיהֶ֔ם נָתַ֥ן יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּיָדָֽם: |
| 43Not a thing was lacking from all the good things that the Lord spoke to the house of Israel; all came to pass. |
|
מגלֹֽא־נָפַ֣ל דָּבָ֔ר מִכֹּל֙ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַטּ֔וֹב אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הַכֹּ֖ל בָּֽא: |
