The Theme of Tanya
First and foremost, the path of Chassidus is an approach to Divine service. Tanya, the foundational work of Chassidus, is not presented as a work of chassidic thought; instead, it is themed as a guide for the proper fulfillment of G‑d’s Will.1
Founded upon the premise that serving G‑d, both practically and passionately, is within the reach of every individual, the Tanya details how this is to be accomplished. It provides a comprehensive approach, which enables the entire person to serve G‑d on a personalized level.2
In this sense, the entirety of Tanya is an explanation and application of the verse, “Ki karov eilecha hadavar meod beficha uvilevavcha la’asoso,” “For this matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.”3
The term “this matter” refers to the entire spectrum of Torah and its mitzvos, whose application in feeling, speech, and action is determined to be “very near to you.”4 Somehow, despite the variances of human condition and the challenge of controlling the heart’s passions, such achievement is meant to be within reach of every Jew. The Alter Rebbe’s guidance in Tanya is set on giving clear explanation as to how this is indeed so accessible.5
