We are very lucky to still learn from Rabbi Gordon a blessed memory. Reply
Shalom.
In Exodus 24 there is an account of what takes place before the giving of the Torah. My question is, why were Aharon and his sons allowed to approach the mountain as part of the priesthood if the firstborn of Israel had not yet forfeited their place as cohen with the sin of the golden calf?
Wouldn't that honour reserved for the priesthood i.e. the firstborn? Please explain. Todah Rabbah.

Great question!
The Ibn Ezra says that the 70 elders were the firstborns. Aaron was a firstborn as well. It is possible that Nadav and Avihu both were as well.
However, the Tzror HaMor says that these were the ones that ascended the mountain as they were ready to receive prophecy. The point was not to make them into priests. It was to make them into prophets.

Rabbi Gordon lives on....I can't remember when I first started listening to Rabbi Gordon. I had recently left Christianity and was browsing the internet for valuable information when I discovered the Chabad.org Website and Rabbi Gordon. I think it could have been about 2013. Listening to Rabbi Gordon has become a part of my daily routine - no day is complete without hearing his voice. Although I am not Jewish, I stick to the areas covered by the seven Noahide laws for Gentiles, so somethings I recognize are definitely for Jews only. Regardless of this I find great value in his timely discourses. Rabbi Gordon lives on!!!!
(NB. I am already on the Chabad.org mailing list so please to not add me again to receive your emails. I already receive them. Thank you)
