Shulchan Aruch: Chapter 528 - The Laws [Pertaining to Establishing] Eruvin for Courtyards on a Festival

In this context, the term shituf refers to the halachic convention through which the residents of all the courtyards leading to a lane join together as a group to enable them to carry from their houses to the courtyards and lane, and vice versa. See sec. 365:10. and sec. 386.

In that source, the Alter Rebbe explains that as long as an article is permitted to be carried on a festival, it may be carried in a courtyard or lane without an eruv or shituf. Nevertheless, in that source, the Alter Rebbe proceeds to state that when making the declaration establishing an eruv or a shituf for the Shabbosos of the entire year, it is preferable to specifically include the festivals as an additional measure.

A city’s Shabbos limits extend 2000 cubits beyond the last home in the city. The exact location of the edge of a city’s Shabbos limits are determined by imposing a virtual rectangle around the city’s border and then measuring 2000 cubits beyond each edge of the rectangle. See sec. 398 and sec. 399 for a detailed discussion of this topic.

In that source, the Alter Rebbe rules that, “neither an eruv for a courtyard nor a shituf for a lane may be established on a festival that falls on Friday, because it appears as if one is correcting a situation.”

This section is not extant in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch. See the Shulchan Aruch of Rav Yosef Caro (Orach Chayim 416).

In that source, the Alter Rebbe writes:

>>If the two days of a festival fall on Thursday and Friday, and one forgot and did not establish an eruv on the day before the festival, he may establish the eruv on the festival itself by making a conditional stipulation, i.e., on the first day of the festival, [the person] should say: “If today is an ordinary weekday, this [bread that I have set aside] should be considered as an eruv. If today is a sacred [day], my statements are of no consequence.” On the following day, he should say: “If today is a sacred [day], I established an eruv yesterday. If today is an ordinary weekday, this [bread that I have set aside] should be considered as an eruv… On the two days of Rosh HaShanah, by contrast, an eruv may not be established on a conditional basis, for they are considered as one long day.”
