to utter to not to utter You are absolutely correct. In fact, the Torah tells us, "If you hold back from making a vow, I will not consider it a sin." (Duet 23:23). Nevertheless, there is great value in making positive vows, especially to give charity and the like because it commits us verbally to good things. Reply
to utter to not to utter What is the benefit of uttering a vow to give to the Temple? In Pirkei Avot chapter 1 there are a few quotes that say things like "say little and do much," "...nothing better for the body than silence," "...be careful with words." So I would assume that it would be better to think a vow and act on than thought than saying a vow with the possibility of not having the funds to give when the time comes. Reply
