Kook, R. Abraham Isaac: Abraham Isaac Kook (1865–1935) assumed his position as the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of (pre-state) Israel upon the formation of the British Mandate for Palestine in 1920. A renowned thinker and mystic, Rabbi Kook authored many books and letters that are the subjects of popular study today, and is a founding father of the "Religious Zionist" movement.
