Mordecai: (4th century BCE) Leader of the Jews during the time of King Ahasuerus, first cousin of Esther. Refused to bow to Haman, thus incurring his wrath. Encouraged Esther to beseech the king to annul Haman's decree calling for the extermination of the Jews, as recorded in the Scroll of Esther, which is read every year on Purim.
